Washington DC — Rep. Ilhan Omar’s phone has been seized following the raid of her Washington DC home on the morning of Oct. 12.
Federal authorities investigating Omar have sent out more than a dozen grand jury subpoenas, some of which are reported to have been issued to relatives of Omar.
Omar’s citizenship status and the legitimacy thereof has been under scrutiny for some time, though recent fraud investigations into Minnesota leaders has renewed speculation of the representative only weeks ahead of midterm elections.
Though speculation around the probe into Omar’s affairs remain unclear, officials say the current searches being executed are part of an ongoing investigation into Omar’s original immigration documentation and were lawfully carried out.
Constitutional law professor Jonathan Turley suggests that Omar could be denaturalized if the government is able to prove that her immigration documents show false information that may have influenced her eligibility for citizenship.
“The U.S. government’s position has always been that if you have information there that is untrue, where you would not have been made a citizen, then you can be denaturalized,” Turley said during a Fox News interview.
This story is developing as it draws criticism from democrats, calling the search “deeply disturbing” and politically motivated.
More to come.
