Elon Musk has accused Texas Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico’s campaign of withholding information after independent journalists released an unverified recording concerning the candidate’s recent absence, allegations his campaign has denied.

AUSTIN, Texas — Elon Musk has joined the growing public controversy surrounding Democratic U.S. Senate nominee James Talarico’s recent absence from campaigning, accusing the Texas candidate’s political team of concealing information after independent journalists released a disputed audio recording Sunday, Oct. 11.
The Tesla and SpaceX chief executive responded to claims circulated by journalists Nick Sortor and Rhein Amacher, who said they contacted an Ohio medical facility while investigating Talarico’s whereabouts during his extended absence from public campaign events.
“The Talarico campaign is hiding something big that voters ought to know about,” Musk wrote on X, amplifying questions about the explanation previously provided by Talarico’s campaign.
The controversy centers on a recording shared online and discussed by Musk, which allegedly captures a conversation with someone identifying herself as an employee of a healthcare facility in Mason, Ohio.
Sortor and Amacher claim the conversation suggests that Talarico had recently been discharged from the facility. However, the recording has not been independently authenticated as evidence of the candidate’s medical history, and no verified medical documentation establishing the allegation has been made public.
Talarico’s campaign has rejected the allegations and maintains that he was recovering from influenza at his home in Austin.
“This is a lie designed to promote a pathetic conspiracy theory. Last week James Talarico was home in Austin, Texas recovering from the flu,” campaign spokesperson JT Ennis said in a statement reported Sunday.
Musk’s remarks brought additional attention to the dispute as Talarico prepares to face Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in the Nov. 3 midterm elections.
The allegations emerged after Talarico spent more than a week away from in-person campaign appearances.
The Democrat had participated in a September fundraising event in New York before canceling subsequent engagements. On Sept. 30, he appeared virtually at an event organized by the United States Hispanic Business Council, explaining that he had become ill and sought medical attention.
During that appearance, Talarico said he had visited an urgent care facility in Dallas and received an influenza diagnosis.
The campaign subsequently attributed his absence from public events to the illness, saying he would resume normal activities after recovering.
Talarico returned to public campaigning Friday, Oct. 9, when he attended the Austin City Limits music festival and was photographed greeting voters.
His reappearance followed days of speculation about his whereabouts, including criticism from President Donald Trump and Paxton.
Ennis addressed those earlier claims by sharing footage of the candidate at the festival.
“Hate to disappoint the conspiracy theorists, but James is still alive and meeting with voters at ACL today,” the spokesperson wrote.
The candidate’s public appearance established that he had resumed campaign activities but did not end the political dispute surrounding his absence.
On Sunday, Sortor and Amacher released their recording and questioned whether the campaign had provided an accurate account of the preceding days.
The audio reportedly includes a person answering a telephone call and discussing what the journalists interpreted as information about a patient’s discharge.
The person speaking on the recording has not been independently identified, and there has been no public confirmation that the individual had access to accurate patient information or was authorized to disclose it.
Those limitations are significant because the recording alone cannot establish whether Talarico received treatment at the facility.
Nevertheless, its publication prompted Musk to question the campaign’s transparency.
Musk has become an influential participant in national political debates through his ownership of X and his involvement in political fundraising and campaign advocacy.
His political action committee, America PAC, has spent millions of dollars supporting Republican candidates and opposing Democrats during the 2026 election cycle, including substantial expenditures in the Texas Senate race.
According to an Oct. 7 analysis by Wired, the committee had spent approximately $9.4 million opposing Talarico and $1.8 million supporting Paxton.
Musk’s criticism therefore comes from a prominent political figure whose organization is financially involved in the election, rather than from an independent investigator.
The dispute also raises questions about the handling of private medical information.
Federal law generally protects confidential patient records and restricts healthcare providers from disclosing identifiable medical information without authorization, subject to certain exceptions.
Even if a healthcare employee were to discuss a person’s treatment with an outside caller, determining whether the information was accurate or lawfully disclosed would require additional evidence.
No verified finding has established that the Ohio facility or any employee violated medical privacy requirements in connection with the recording.
The allegations also do not independently establish anything about Talarico’s ability to carry out public responsibilities. Whether a person has received medical treatment is distinct from evidence concerning the performance of official duties.
For the Texas Senate race, the controversy has become part of a broader exchange between the opposing campaigns as Election Day approaches.
Paxton and other Republicans previously criticized Talarico’s absence and questioned his campaign’s explanation, while the Democrat’s representatives accused opponents of promoting unfounded speculation.
Talarico’s return to the campaign trail came as both candidates prepared for the final weeks of campaigning, with early voting scheduled to begin Oct. 19.
The Democrat is seeking to win a Senate seat that Republicans have held for decades, while Paxton is campaigning to retain the seat for his party.
The renewed attention surrounding Talarico’s absence has given political commentators another subject of debate, but the central allegation remains disputed.
Musk’s statement expresses his suspicion that the campaign has withheld information. It does not independently verify the interpretation of the recording or establish that the campaign’s explanation was false.
As of Sunday, the publicly documented developments consist of Talarico’s temporary absence, his campaign’s explanation that he was recovering from influenza, his subsequent return to public appearances, the release of the disputed recording and the campaign’s denial of the allegations.
