WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump presented Elon Musk with the National Medal of Science on Thursday, Oct. 8, recognizing the SpaceX founder’s contributions to aerospace engineering, satellite communications and advanced technology during a ceremony honoring six prominent figures in the American technology industry.
The president described Musk as a “national treasure” and “our modern-day Thomas Edison,” delivering an extended tribute to his engineering accomplishments, business ventures and assistance during emergency response operations.
The ceremony took place during the administration’s Science: A New Golden Age Summit at the Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace in Washington, where government officials, technology executives and researchers gathered to discuss federal science policy, artificial intelligence and the future of American innovation.

Musk was among four recipients of the National Medal of Science, the federal government’s highest scientific honor. Trump presented the same award to Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Google co-founder Sergey Brin and Advanced Micro Devices CEO Lisa Su.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Dell Technologies founder Michael Dell received the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, which recognizes achievements in technological development and commercial innovation.
The White House confirmed all six recipients in its official Oct. 8 announcement, outlining their contributions to aerospace engineering, semiconductor design, information technology, computing infrastructure and artificial intelligence.
During the ceremony, Trump personally handed the awards to the recipients and delivered remarks describing the significance of their work to American technological development.
Musk received particular attention because of his leadership of SpaceX, Tesla, Starlink and Neuralink, as well as his involvement in advanced artificial intelligence systems.
The National Medal of Science citation recognized Musk “for engineering achievements of extraordinary ambition and scale that have pushed the frontiers of space exploration, intelligent systems, communications, and beyond, renewing American technological leadership and opening a new chapter in American manufacturing.”
The citation reflects the administration’s view that Musk’s companies have contributed to several major areas of American industry, particularly the development of reusable launch vehicles and commercially operated space transportation.
Trump opened his tribute by comparing Musk’s technological accomplishments with those of historically influential American inventors.
“We honor an industrial titan, a brilliant engineer, and one of the greatest technology founders to ever live,” Trump said.
“His name is Elon Musk. Quite honestly, there is nobody like him. Few Americans in history have done more to advance America’s national interest than Elon. In one field after another, his genius and determination have made science-fiction into reality, and that is so true.”
The president then described the founding of SpaceX in 2002, when Musk invested much of his personal wealth in developing privately manufactured rockets capable of reaching orbit.
“Elon founded SpaceX with his life savings in 2002 and created the first privately developed liquid-fueled rocket to reach orbit in the face of vanishingly impossible odds,” Trump said.
“Nobody thought it was possible to do the things he’s doing and in so many different ways.”
SpaceX achieved a major milestone in September 2008 when its Falcon 1 became the first privately developed liquid-fueled rocket to reach Earth orbit.
The accomplishment followed several unsuccessful launches and helped establish the company as a serious participant in commercial space transportation.
SpaceX later developed the Falcon 9 rocket, which introduced routine recovery and reuse of orbital-class rocket boosters.
The company also expanded into cargo transportation and human spaceflight under contracts with NASA.
Trump highlighted SpaceX’s role in restoring American crewed launches following the retirement of NASA’s space shuttle fleet in 2011.
For nearly nine years, NASA relied on Russian Soyuz spacecraft to transport American astronauts to the International Space Station.
That arrangement changed in May 2020 when SpaceX launched astronauts aboard its Crew Dragon spacecraft, restoring crewed orbital launches from American soil.
“SpaceX saved NASA from relying on foreign nations to send our astronauts into space, and I want to congratulate SpaceX on the safe return of Crew 12 from the International Space Station just a few hours ago,” Trump said.
“Congratulations!”
The remarks followed Thursday morning’s successful splashdown of NASA’s Crew-12 mission off the California coast.
The four astronauts — NASA’s Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway, European Space Agency astronaut Sophie Adenot and Russian cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev — returned after approximately eight months aboard the orbiting research laboratory.
Their SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft landed in the Pacific Ocean after departing the station Wednesday.
Trump acknowledged the timing of the successful return, joking about the possibility that a problem with the landing could have affected the atmosphere of the awards ceremony.
“We wanted to make sure. Could you imagine? If things didn’t work out so well, it would be not a very happy moment,” Trump said.
“I wonder if he’d be here. I think he might not be here, but it always works out well for Elon, right? We’re proud of you. Very proud of you. National treasure.”
The Crew-12 landing provided a contemporary example of SpaceX’s role in transporting astronauts for NASA and its international partners.
Under NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, SpaceX operates spacecraft that transport personnel between Earth and the International Space Station.
The program forms part of a broader federal strategy involving commercial partnerships intended to reduce transportation costs and maintain access to low Earth orbit.
Trump also discussed Starship, SpaceX’s large launch vehicle designed to support future missions carrying substantial payloads into space.
“Under Elon’s leadership, SpaceX has also developed Starship, the largest rocket in history, which is caught out of thin air and for rapid reuse, and it’s the first time anyone’s ever seen anything quite like it,” Trump said.
Starship is being developed as a fully reusable transportation system intended to carry cargo and eventually astronauts to destinations including the moon and Mars.
Its Super Heavy booster uses a specialized launch tower equipped with mechanical arms designed to catch the returning rocket, an approach intended to facilitate rapid reuse.
SpaceX has demonstrated booster recovery using the tower system, although the complete Starship transportation system remains under development.
The vehicle is also central to NASA’s Artemis lunar exploration program, which relies on a modified Starship spacecraft for planned lunar landing missions.
Beyond launch vehicles, Trump credited Musk with establishing a large satellite communications network through Starlink.
“They also created the largest ever communication satellite network, Starlink,” the president said.
Starlink uses thousands of satellites in low Earth orbit to provide broadband internet access to customers across numerous countries.
The network has been used in remote communities, disaster zones and locations where conventional communications infrastructure is unavailable or damaged.
Trump devoted a substantial portion of his remarks to Starlink’s role in North Carolina following the destruction caused by Hurricane Helene in September 2024.
The hurricane produced severe flooding across portions of the southeastern United States, including western North Carolina, where landslides, damaged roads and widespread infrastructure failures isolated numerous communities.
Telecommunications disruptions complicated emergency response operations because residents and rescue personnel struggled to establish reliable communications.
Trump recalled discussions with North Carolina officials concerning the need for satellite internet equipment.
“And in North Carolina, I will tell you personally because I was involved, we had a hurricane, one of the great water hurricanes of all time — delivered more water than at any time that we can remember or in record,” Trump said.
“It saved hundreds of lives by calling Elon.”
The president described how damaged transportation routes and floodwaters left some communities effectively cut off from surrounding areas.
“I remember the governor said, ‘Sir, is there any way, do you know a man named Elon Musk?’ I said, ‘I happen to know him. Yes.’”
“‘We need Starlink’ because the water was so deep that many islands were created, and the people had no way of getting off those islands, and they had no communication,” Trump continued.
“And they said, ‘we cannot get anybody to help us.’”
Trump said he contacted Musk directly and requested assistance in making Starlink equipment available.
“And I called up Elon, and it was like impossible to get this equipment, and he had it there in a matter of hours and saved hundreds of lives,” Trump said.
“He saved hundreds of lives in North Carolina, so I never forgot that experience. It was a terrible time, and the job he did, and he acted so fast.”
The remarks reflected Trump’s personal account of the emergency response. The specific number of lives he attributed to the satellite communications deployment was not independently established during the ceremony.
Starlink equipment was used during Hurricane Helene recovery operations to restore communications in areas where traditional networks were damaged.
Emergency responders and relief organizations have increasingly relied on satellite systems during natural disasters because they can provide connectivity without depending on local telecommunications infrastructure.
Trump concluded the account by thanking Musk for responding quickly.
“Everybody said they were impossible to get. So, thank you, Elon, for that very special moment.”
The president then shifted to Musk’s work in electric vehicles and automobile manufacturing.
“In addition, Elon created Tesla, the first successful new car manufacturer in over 75 years, producing the first commercially viable electric cars with the first consumer self-driving technology,” Trump said.
Musk joined Tesla in 2004 as an early investor and board chairman before becoming chief executive in 2008. The company itself was founded in 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning.
Tesla became a major manufacturer of electric vehicles through models including the Roadster, Model S, Model 3, Model X and Model Y.
Its production and commercial expansion contributed to the broader development of electric vehicle markets, battery technology and charging infrastructure.
The company has also developed driver-assistance software and continues working on autonomous driving technology.
Trump used the discussion of Tesla to recount a family connection involving the company’s namesake, Serbian-American inventor Nikola Tesla.
The president’s uncle, Dr. John G. Trump, was an electrical engineer and physicist who worked at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Following Nikola Tesla’s death in 1943, John Trump was asked to examine his papers and technical materials.
“Interestingly, when you mentioned Tesla, my uncle, Dr. John Trump, was commissioned by the United States government to do a report on Nikola Tesla,” the president said.
“They wanted to know: Was he real or not real? Was he a true genius or not?”
Trump said his uncle ultimately recognized Tesla’s scientific abilities.
“My uncle, after a fairly short period of time determined that he was a true and great genius, and that he was real in every single way,” the president said.
“Otherwise, you’d have to change the name of the car company. You wouldn’t want to be associated.”
The president added a joke about how he might have approached the assignment himself.
“See now, if I did the report, Elon, I might say, ‘he wasn’t that good.’ But my uncle was a different kind of a person than I am, and he gave Tesla the highest report.”
“He said he was a true, great genius. So, very nice.”
Trump also praised Neuralink, Musk’s brain-computer interface company, which is developing implanted technology intended to allow individuals with severe paralysis to interact with computers and other devices.
The technology has been tested in people with neurological disabilities, with early research focusing on restoring certain communication and computer-control capabilities.
Additional applications involving visual restoration and broader neurological functions remain under development.
“Through Neuralink, Elon is also restoring sight, speech, and motion to those who cannot see, talk, or move, and he turned SpaceX AI into one of the world’s leaders in superintelligence,” Trump said.
The president’s statement described Neuralink’s ambitions as well as its existing research. Clinical applications involving restoration of sight and movement have not all been established as routine treatments.
Trump concluded by comparing Musk directly with Thomas Edison.
“Elon is our modern-day Thomas Edison, and Elon, I want to congratulate you,” he said.
“You’re my friend, and all of that. But you are a very, very special guy. Thank you very much, and congratulations, Elon. Great job.”
The ceremony also recognized several other technology executives whose companies have played major roles in shaping computing infrastructure and digital technology.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang received the National Medal of Science for advances in graphics processing units and parallel computing.
Nvidia’s processors were initially developed primarily for graphics rendering but have become central to artificial intelligence training, scientific simulation and large-scale computing.
The White House recognized Huang “for advancing the graphics processing unit into a general-purpose computing architecture through innovations in processor design and software, transforming massively parallel computation and powering breakthroughs in scientific computing and super intelligence.”
Nvidia has become one of the world’s most influential semiconductor companies as demand for processors used in advanced computing systems has increased.
Its hardware and software platforms support data centers, research laboratories and companies developing large language models and other artificial intelligence applications.
AMD CEO Lisa Su was honored for her contributions to semiconductor engineering and high-performance computing.
The White House citation recognized Su’s leadership in processor architecture and chiplet-based integration.
Those technologies have contributed to increasingly powerful computing systems, including supercomputers capable of performing calculations at exascale speeds.
Exascale computing refers to systems able to perform at least one quintillion calculations per second under specified measurement standards.
Such machines support scientific research involving climate modeling, medicine, materials science and other computationally intensive fields.
Sergey Brin, who co-founded Google with Larry Page, received the National Medal of Science for his work developing foundational search algorithms and information retrieval systems.
The White House credited Brin with helping transform access to information across scientific research, commerce and everyday life.
Google’s search technology became one of the foundational services of the modern internet, while the company expanded into cloud computing, mobile software, digital advertising and artificial intelligence.
The National Medal of Technology and Innovation was presented to Michael Dell for his contributions to personal computing and enterprise technology.
Dell founded his computer company in 1984 while attending the University of Texas at Austin.
The business became a major manufacturer and supplier of personal computers, servers and enterprise information technology systems.
The White House recognized Dell’s work expanding access to computing, building a global technology company and supporting educational opportunities for future scientists and engineers.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella received the same technology award for his leadership in transforming Microsoft’s cloud computing and artificial intelligence operations.
Nadella became Microsoft CEO in 2014 and oversaw substantial growth in the company’s Azure cloud platform and enterprise software businesses.
The administration recognized his contributions to building computing infrastructure used to develop and deploy advanced artificial intelligence technologies.
His appearance at the ceremony came on the same day that Vice President JD Vance announced immigration enforcement measures involving Microsoft and several other technology companies.
The Labor Department suspended those companies from parts of the permanent labor certification process, citing concerns over their use of foreign labor programs.
Trump did not address that dispute while presenting Nadella’s award.
The juxtaposition demonstrated how the administration is simultaneously promoting technology companies’ contributions to American innovation while increasing scrutiny of their hiring and immigration practices.
The Associated Press reported on the six recipients and the contrasting policy announcements, noting that five of the six honorees were born outside the United States.
The recipients reflect the international backgrounds of many prominent figures in American technology, an industry that has long depended on a combination of domestic education, international recruitment and private investment.
Beyond the awards ceremony, the summit served as a platform for broader administration announcements concerning federal research priorities.
According to the White House’s accompanying science policy fact sheet, federal agencies and private partners announced initiatives representing more than $6 billion in combined investments.
The proposed efforts include expanded computing access for scientific research, support for students and early-career researchers, and partnerships involving universities, businesses and government laboratories.
A central feature of the administration’s science strategy is the Genesis Mission, a federal initiative intended to use advanced computing systems to accelerate scientific discovery.
The program seeks to connect artificial intelligence tools, federal research facilities and large scientific datasets to improve the speed of experimentation and analysis.
Private companies have pledged computing resources and other forms of support for the initiative.
Administration officials argue that advanced computing can help researchers identify promising materials, analyze complex biological processes and develop new technologies more efficiently.
The summit also featured announcements related to space exploration and nuclear technology.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman and Energy Secretary Chris Wright signed an agreement intended to advance nuclear power and propulsion systems for future space missions.
The NASA announcement described the partnership as part of efforts to develop reliable energy technologies for missions beyond low Earth orbit.
Nuclear power systems could support spacecraft and surface facilities operating far from Earth, particularly where sunlight is limited or power demands exceed the capabilities of conventional solar systems.
The administration has linked such research to its broader goal of maintaining American leadership in space exploration.
Trump’s remarks also reflected his preference for the term “super intelligence,” which his administration has promoted as a replacement for the more widely used expression “artificial intelligence.”
That terminology has appeared in recent White House policy announcements and federal initiatives.
The president has argued that the term better represents the expanding capabilities of advanced computing systems.
However, artificial intelligence remains the standard expression used by much of the technology industry and scientific community.
The administration’s emphasis on industry leadership comes amid disagreement over changes to federal science funding.
Some researchers and former government officials have expressed concern that reductions in certain research grants and changes to federal employment could weaken long-term scientific capacity.
The administration maintains that its approach will improve research efficiency, encourage private investment and concentrate resources on important national priorities.
Those competing views reflect a broader debate over the roles of government, universities and private industry in supporting scientific discovery.
Michael Kratsios, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, said the six medal recipients exemplified the contributions of individuals whose work has influenced modern technological development.
“Each of these medalists has transformed their field or industry, laying the foundations for technologies we already can barely imagine living without,” Kratsios said.
“While we in government work to deliver the efforts a New Golden Age of Science will require, we know that scientific progress and technological innovation depend on the insight and character of individuals. Innovators like these six awardees are the architects of the future.”
The National Medal of Science was established in 1959 and first awarded in 1963.
It recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to scientific knowledge in fields including mathematics, engineering, physical sciences, biological sciences and social sciences.
The National Medal of Technology and Innovation was established in 1980 and first awarded in 1985.
It recognizes contributions to technological progress that have strengthened the American economy and improved quality of life.
Thursday’s recipients represented achievements across commercial spaceflight, semiconductor design, internet search, personal computing, cloud infrastructure and advanced computational systems.
Trump’s extended tribute to Musk also marked another public demonstration of their renewed relationship following a period of political disagreements in 2025.
Musk had previously served in a prominent role advising the administration on government efficiency before disagreements with Trump became public.
Their relationship has since improved, with Musk again participating in major administration events.
The president’s remarks emphasized their personal association alongside Musk’s technological accomplishments.
The timing of the ceremony also connected the awards with SpaceX’s successful return of four astronauts from the International Space Station earlier Thursday.
That mission provided an immediate example of the aerospace capabilities for which Musk was being honored.
For the administration, the summit offered an opportunity to recognize major technology executives while presenting a broader policy agenda involving scientific research, advanced computing and space exploration.
For the honorees, the awards represent formal federal recognition of contributions that have influenced industries central to the American economy.
The ceremony concluded with Trump reiterating his appreciation for Musk and the other recipients, while federal officials continued outlining initiatives intended to expand scientific research and technological development.
The six medals recognize individual achievements, but the administration’s wider agenda will depend on the implementation of the research partnerships, funding commitments and scientific programs announced throughout the summit.
