Authorities are searching for a 22-year-old man as a person of interest in the shooting death of his mother, Andria Hanafin, in their Reading home.
“If you see him, please do not approach him, just call us,” Reading Police Chief David Clark said at a press conference Thursday morning. “He is to be considered at this point, even though he’s a person of interest, potentially armed and dangerous.”
Middlesex DA Marian Ryan added, “We are looking to find out what happened in that home last night, and we certainly don’t want a tragedy to be compounded by anything else taking place.”
Reading Police responded a little before 12:40 a.m. Thursday to a home at 9 Center Ave. in Reading after receiving a 911 call from a resident, Matthew Hanafin. He reported that he had just returned home and found the body of his wife, Andria Hanafin, 49, in their kitchen, according to Middlesex DA Marian Ryan.
Also present in the home was the couple’s 13-year-old child, who had last seen Andria Hanafin at 5 p.m. Wednesday, according to Ryan.
But missing from the home was 22-year-old Ryan Hanafin and his 2010 black Dodge Charger with Massachusetts registration 2PSY15. The vehicle was last seen at 7:25 p.m. Wednesday headed in the direction of Tewksbury.
“At this point we are looking for Ryan Hanafin to talk about what happened yesterday,” Marian Ryan said. “We are also interested in finding that vehicle.”
Authorities say that Ryan Hanafin is about 5-foot-10. He had an active license to carry firearms in the state, issued in 2024, that was suspended early this morning, Ryan said. He was until roughly six months ago employed and had been a student at an area university.
It has been more than 13 years since the last murder in Reading, Chief Clark said.
This is a developing story.
