Outage briefly takes Market Basket registers offline

Customers at a number of Market Basket stores were left without the ability to pay for their grocery items for a brief period of time Wednesday afternoon due to an apparent glitch with the company’s cash register systems.
Local residents began reporting the outage shortly after 1 p.m., about the same time the site downdetector.com also showed a spike in problems reported at the company.
A Market Basket store in Lowell confirmed that the outage took place Wednesday but said that its systems were back online as of 2 p.m., and that the store was still open. The outage led to a flood of social media posts from people claiming to be at Massachusetts or New Hampshire Market Basket locations where customers were suddenly unable to pay for their items.
In response to complaints about the issue on social media, the Tewksbury-based grocery chain said the issue had been resolved.
“Some stores experienced a temporary technical glitch with the registers – this is resolved now and we apologize for any inconvenience,” the Market Basket X account posted Wednesday afternoon.
It is unclear how many stores were affected, or what caused the outage.
