ALBANY – NASA has invited states to submit one proposed site for a United States Space Academy and State Senator James Skoufis (D, Cornwall) is urging Governor Hochul to select New York Stewart International Airport near Newburgh as New York’s entry.

Skoufis says Stewart would be an ideal location for the project. “It offers existing aerospace infrastructure – including one of the few runways in the country designated for space shuttle landings – alongside significant on-side development opportunities.”

He also noted the airport is shared by the Stewart Air National Guard Base, has seamless access to I-84 and the Thruway “and the Orange County community is well-equipped to host a military academy given its long history with West Point.”

The space academy would be an academic institution combining technical education with leadership development and civic responsibility, Skoufis told the governor.
