Los Angeles — Production on “The Batman Part II” has been temporarily suspended as director Matt Reeves steps away to focus on a family matter.

Warner Bros. and DC Studios confirmed the pause, saying Reeves has the studio’s full support and that work on the highly anticipated sequel will continue.

“Production on ‘The Batman Part II’ has been temporarily paused while Matt Reeves focuses on a family matter,” a representative said. “Matt has the full support of DC Studios and we look forward to continuing the journey soon.”

Robert Pattinson is set to return as Batman in the sequel, which has already undergone several delays. The film was initially scheduled for release on Oct. 2, 2026, before Warner Bros. moved it to Oct. 1, 2027. In July, the studio pushed the release again, this time to February 2028.

Reeves’ first “Batman” film arrived in March 2022.

Pattinson will be joined by Scarlett Johansson, Colin Farrell, Sebastian Stan, Andy Serkis and Jeffrey Wright in the sequel.

Following the first release-date delay, DC Studios boss James Gunn defended the decision on Threads, arguing that long gaps between major blockbuster sequels are not unusual.

“To be fair, a 5-year gap or more is fairly common in sequels,” Gunn wrote. He pointed to the gaps between films in franchises including “Alien,” “Incredibles,” “Terminator,” “Avatar,” “Top Gun” and “Guardians.”

In a recent interview with Collider, Pattinson also described “The Batman Part II” as a different approach from the first movie.

“It’s so ambitious. I mean, I sort of said the other day on something that the first one was a different take on a Batman movie, and this one is another,” he told Collider. “It’s a real left turn from the first one, but somehow it keeps elements of the kind of feel of it. But it just feels really ambitious, and I’m excited to see how it turns out.”
