Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are putting members of the paparazzi on blast for the “extraordinarily reckless behavior” they said forced their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, to change schools.

A pair of men wearing black backpacks were apparently spotted near the perimeter of the school, walking along the edge of the property and peering in at the activity unfolding on the grounds. They were later identified as members of a European press agency, prompting the Sussexes to pull their children out of classes just days into the new school year.

A spokesperson for the couple condemned the press’ behavior as an “extraordinary lack of judgment” and an “unacceptable intrusion.”

“It is concerning enough that certain European paparazzi appear unwilling to respect the privacy of children at school,” the spokesperson told CNN. “But to behave in this manner in these particular circumstances, and so soon after the incident at RAF Fairford, demonstrates an extraordinary lack of judgment.”

British counterterrorism police earlier this month declared a major incident and arrested five men near RAF Fairford over a suspected explosives plot, though no bombs were ever found.

“Whatever photographs they may have been seeking, this was not only an unacceptable intrusion into the privacy of children; it was an irresponsible and ill-considered way to conduct themselves in the vicinity of a school,” the spokesperson concluded.

Harry, Meghan and their children recently moved back to England, arriving on Aug. 26, just ahead of the start of fall term at Archie and Lilibet’s new U.K. school. Their return came some six years after Harry and Meghan stepped back from royal duties, opting instead for a life in the United States. Harry has since spoken out about their relocation, noting that his children are doing well with the school switch.

“It’s been great. It’s been great to be back on British soil,” he said.

He added: “The kids are happy in school, and it gives me a chance to really focus on Invictus in Birmingham.”
