Synopsys and OpenAI have agreed to develop an artificial intelligence model specifically for semiconductor design, establishing a partnership aimed at using AI to speed up one of the industry’s most technically demanding processes.

The model, called GPT-Synopsys, will be trained and tuned for chip-design tasks. Its capabilities will include interpreting circuit descriptions written in a code-like language and assisting with decisions about how billions of transistors should be arranged on a small piece of silicon.

Under the agreement, OpenAI’s model will be trained to work with Synopsys software tools. The companies intend for the technology to help engineers assess design alternatives and make optimization decisions more efficiently.

Synopsys said the arrangement includes a revenue-sharing structure. OpenAI will pay the company a training subscription fee to learn how to use Synopsys’ tools, while the two companies will divide revenue generated when customers use the resulting product.

Synopsys Chief Executive Sassine Ghazi said the agreement was designed so the AI product would expand the company’s business rather than replace its existing operations.

The AI system will also continue to rely on traditional verification methods. Synopsys said its software will check AI-generated work using established computing techniques to determine whether a proposed chip design operates correctly.

The partnership was announced at a Synopsys investor summit, where the company also increased its expectations for fiscal 2027 revenue growth. Synopsys now forecasts revenue growth of 15% for the fiscal year, compared with the 11.19% growth analysts expected, according to LSEG data.

Shares of Synopsys climbed as much as 7% following the announcement of the partnership and the revised forecast.

The agreement highlights the semiconductor industry’s expanding use of AI in areas beyond the chips that run AI applications. As manufacturers continue fitting more transistors and functionality into increasingly advanced processors, chip designers face more complex optimization challenges.

Synopsys supplies software used across the semiconductor design process, including tools that allow engineers to develop and verify designs before manufacturing starts.

For OpenAI, the partnership expands the application of its AI technology into a specialized industrial workflow. For Synopsys, it offers a way to integrate AI into its existing design tools while maintaining conventional verification as a final safeguard.
