Two off-duty pilots from Ukraine and Russia are being hailed as heroes after putting aside geopolitical conflict to save a commercial flight heading to Israel from an attempted mid-air hijacking on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, as reported by Al Jazeera.
The crisis unfolded aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073 en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv when the Omani co-pilot stabbed the Emirati captain in what Israeli officials described as a suspected terrorist attack, various news oulets reported. The assault sent the Boeing 737 MAX 8 into a sudden, terrifying 17,400-foot plunge. As panic gripped the cabin, Israeli passengers urged two off-duty reserve pilots sitting in the passenger area to intervene.
Breaching the cockpit alongside passengers, the off-duty crew helped neutralize the attacker. The Ukrainian and Russian pilots then took control of the flight deck together. Working in tandem, they stabilized the rapidly descending aircraft and safely executed an emergency landing at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia, as reported by Ukrainian National News.
While some early reports mistakenly claimed the active crew members fighting in the cockpit were Russian and Ukrainian, official security updates later published clarified that the two nationalities actually comprised the off-duty rescue team. The wounded captain was hospitalized, the attacker was taken into Saudi custody, and all 174 passengers eventually landed safely back in Israel via a replacement flight later that evening.
