Though all eyes were on Caden Kvapil after his valiant victory over Corey Heim in the Late Model Stock racing ValleyStar Credit Union 300, once the haulers packed up and the confetti had been cleared from the victory. However, that attention shifted dramatically to what happened immediately after the race. Out of nowhere, a confrontation between Treyten Lapcevich’s team erupted near the infamous Martinsville Speedway hotdog stand.
The race itself had already displayed its share of drama. Heim and Lapcevich were fighting for P2 behind Kvapil during the closing laps, but neither driver was willing to give up that position. Kvapil ultimately secured the win while Heim came in P2 and Lapcevich P3. But the battle did not end after the checkered flag dropped. As Heim and Lapcevich prepared to park on pit road, Heim’s No. 22 climbed over Lapcevich’s car, resulting in astronomical damage.
But this was only the beginning. Seconds after the incident, Lapcevich could be seen climbing out of his car and starting toward Heim on pit road before team owner Chad Bryant intervened. At that moment, it appeared that everything was under control, but it didn’t stay that way for long. Later, as Heim made his way through the infield, several members of Chad Bryant Racing confronted him near the hot dog stand. A video that has surfaced since the incident shows Heim trying to back away as it escalated. The video shows him trying to protect himself until a police officer arrived and helped him flee the scene.
Another bizarre moment shows one of the punches thrown at Heim missing and hitting the menu sign behind him, creating an image as unimaginable as the scenario itself. NASCAR recently posted its own video of the altercation, acknowledging it happened, and fans reacted immediately. News of the incident quickly spread across social media, with much of the discussion focused on the fact that the confrontation involved multiple members of a racing team rather than remaining a disagreement between the two drivers in the on-track incident. Denny Hamlin has since publicly called on NASCAR to take action.
Heim, however, quickly brushed off the altercation, sharing a thumbs-up photo on social media with the message: “Solid effort, but at least make it count next time.”Many were left scratching their heads, while others saw it as a response. Most, however, viewed it as Heim choosing to laugh off the incident rather than drag it out off the track. Heim and Chad Bryant Racing also have an interesting history. Heim made his 2019 ARCA debut and made 13 starts with the team that same season.
Now, he is preparing for a full-time Cup Series move with 23XI Racing in 2027 after already clinching two wins at the Cup level this season. Yet, what should have been remembered as Caden Kvapil’s first ValleyStar Credit Union 300 victory instead became another chapter in a Martinsville weekend filled with controversy. Heim left with a runner-up finish, a damaged race car, and an unforgettable souvenir from the hot dog stand. The racing may have ended Saturday night, but the Martinsville drama clearly has not.
