THE NEW FACE OF WHITE SUPREMACY
A black woman is discovered hanging from a tree in Mississippi. The story attracts national attention, immediately invoking images of America’s horrific history of racial lynchings.
But as investigators began uncovering the evidence, an entirely different picture emerged.

Tasia Fortune
Three black men have now been charged with murder, and investigators believe the victim was killed during a dispute involving drugs before her body was deliberately positioned to resemble a hanging.
The case raises an uncomfortable question about the rush to interpret violent crimes through a racial lens before investigators have even established what happened.
The Murder of Tasia Fortune
On August 3, 2026, the body of 29-year-old Tasia Fortune, a mother of four, was discovered hanging from a tree behind an abandoned home in Jackson, Mississippi.
Considering Mississippi’s well-documented history of racial violence, the discovery understandably raised disturbing questions. The circumstances attracted national media coverage and renewed discussion about the possibility of racial violence.
There was just one problem.
Investigators hadn’t established that Fortune was the victim of a racially motivated attack.
As the investigation progressed, evidence began pointing toward an entirely different explanation.
During a September 25 court hearing, Jackson Police Detective Samuel Dukes testified that Fortune was apparently killed following an argument involving drugs. Citing the medical examiner’s findings, Dukes explained that the hanging had been staged after her death.
Investigators believe Fortune was killed elsewhere before her body was moved behind the vacant house. According to witness interviews discussed in court, the young mother fought desperately for her life.

Authorities have not publicly disclosed her precise cause of death or established why her body was subsequently hanged from the tree.
Three Men Charged With Murder
The investigation has now resulted in three murder charges.
Jarques Ratliff, 51, was arrested September 11. Earnest Lloyd Jr., 25, was arrested September 22. A third man, Eric Clark, 45, surrendered to authorities September 25.
All three defendants are black.
Ratliff has pleaded not guilty and remains incarcerated without bond. During his preliminary hearing, he reportedly told the court that he and Fortune had been friends.
The hearing is scheduled to resume September 30, when the court will consider whether sufficient evidence exists to advance his case toward a possible grand jury indictment.
