Greenville, South Carolina — Actress Hayden Panettiere died from the toxic effects of fentanyl and several other substances, and authorities in South Carolina have determined that her death was accidental.
The Greenville County Coroner’s Office announced Tuesday that Panettiere’s death resulted from the toxic effects of fentanyl, 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol and quetiapine. She was 36.
Panettiere, who was known for her roles in the television series “Heroes” and “Nashville,” was pronounced dead on August 16 after emergency responders were dispatched to an apartment in Greenville, South Carolina.
The coroner’s office said medics found Panettiere in cardiac arrest and were unable to resuscitate her.
The official determination provides further information about the circumstances of her death after the initial announcement in August. At that time, her representative confirmed that the actress had died at 36.
Panettiere began her career in entertainment at a young age and later worked as both an actress and singer. Her performance on “Heroes” made her known internationally, while her portrayal of Juliette Barnes on “Nashville” introduced her to another large television audience.
The coroner classified the manner of death as an accident.
Among the substances identified in the official findings was fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid, along with 4-ANPP and several prescription medications. The cause of death reflects the toxic effects of the combination of substances.
Panettiere’s death drew widespread attention because of her lengthy entertainment career and her public discussions about difficult periods in her life.
The coroner’s ruling establishes the substances involved in her death and formally concludes that the manner of death was accidental.
