President Donald Trump addresses world leaders Tuesday at the United Nations General Assembly in New York as the annual General Debate begins its first day of high-level speeches.

The morning session began at 9 a.m. EDT at U.N. Headquarters.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is scheduled to deliver the first national address, followed by Trump representing the United States. Brazil has traditionally opened the General Debate since 1955, with the host country, the United States, speaking second.

The General Debate of the 81st U.N. General Assembly begins Tuesday, Sept. 22, and continues through Saturday, Sept. 26, before concluding Monday, Sept. 28. Nearly 130 heads of state and government are expected to participate during the broader high-level week.

This year’s debate is being held under the theme, “Restoring trust, managing transformation: a United Nations that delivers for all.” World leaders are expected to use their addresses to outline national priorities and positions on international conflicts, security, economic issues and other global challenges.

Trump’s appearance comes as the administration is engaged in diplomatic talks involving several major international issues, including the war in Ukraine, tensions involving Iran and U.S. relations with China.
