Philadelphia — Ed Sheeran addressed fans during his Philadelphia concert as controversy continued to surround rapper Macklemore, who was removed from Sheeran’s U.S. tour following pro-Palestinian comments made during a performance.

Sheeran’s other opening acts later withdrew from the tour in solidarity with Macklemore, according to CNN. During the Philadelphia show, Sheeran spoke directly to the audience about the situation, acknowledging that he had made mistakes while stressing that he had not wanted to become a political commentator.

The concert went ahead without major disruption despite demonstrations earlier in the day.

Sheeran’s remarks marked his first major public response to the controversy during a live performance, CNN reported.
