Los Angeles — George Lucas and his wife, Mellody Hobson, have marked the opening of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles, bringing to fruition a project that had been in development for more than two decades.

CNN reported that the approximately 300,000-square-foot museum cost more than $1 billion. Its exhibits include material connected to Star Wars while also examining the wider history of visual storytelling.

The opening drew a large gathering of Hollywood figures and other celebrities. CNN’s coverage featured reactions from Mark Hamill, Francis Ford Coppola, Jon M. Chu, Brian Grazer and Lewis Hamilton.

Oprah Winfrey was also among the high-profile guests attending the event. Hobson described the occasion as an emotional moment.

The museum was scheduled to open to the public on September 22.
