Los Angeles — Zach Cregger’s new “Resident Evil” reboot opened to an estimated $60 million in the United States, delivering the largest domestic opening weekend in the long-running horror franchise.

The debut surpassed the previous franchise record set by 2010’s “Resident Evil: Afterlife,” which opened with $26 million domestically, without adjusting for inflation.

Internationally, the new film generated another $48.3 million, bringing its reported worldwide opening total to $108.3 million.

The movie had been projected before the weekend to earn between $40 million and $50 million domestically. Its $60 million debut therefore came in above those expectations.

Directed by Cregger, whose previous film was “Weapons,” the reboot is Sony’s latest installment in the “Resident Evil” movie series, which is based on the popular video-game franchise.
