It’s funny how someone can change around an opinion when they see that disaster could be on the horizon.

Let’s talk about New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani. He’s obviously no stranger to controversy, especially when it comes to anything surrounding his own New York Police Department. But earlier this year, he stirred up a hornet’s nest when he released a video, noting how he was looking to have Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrested when he visited New York this month for the UN General Assembly.

In the infamous video, he notes how Netanyahu is a “war criminal” and should be taken in for charges as such. However, he quickly learned that he didn’t have the support to back that up, so he decided on a different tactic – calling on his fellow New Yorkers to “take to the streets” and protest Netanyahu upon his visit.

Well, apparently that tactic seems to be falling apart as well. According to Fox News, Mamdani has carefully begun walking back his protesting claims, and has even noted that he has no plans to attend such protests.

“I do not have any plans to attend any protest at the UNGA,” he noted earlier this week. “To New Yorkers, I have never encouraged them to protest. What I have always told them is that they have the right to do so in this city.”

Not necessarily true. He noted that protesting was “one of the bedrocks of our city” and did push on said encouragement, despite his recent statement. Funny, he seems to be doing this a lot as of late, doesn’t he?

“It is something that has been a part of what makes our city so special, that New Yorkers can express themselves whether they are in support or in opposition no matter on whatever topic,” he said at the time.

Sure.

But why the change? Well, there are one of two things that stand out here – and they both could’ve taken a drastic effect.

The first involves the protests themselves. As you’re probably aware, we’ve seen Palestine-themed protests in the past where people have lost control and hurt others, leading to hundreds of arrests. Imagine something like that on a larger scale – in front of the United Nations. Talk about chaos.

And at a time when the United States is currently in conflict with Iran, who knows what could have happened if Mamdani kept pushing for more protests?

As for the other factor, it involves the NYPD themselves. Following the release of Mamdani’s video, several sources spoke out against it, indicating that he was lighting a “powder keg” that could put the city’s police force in danger.

“Basically, he’s making what would be considered a Category 1 hurricane that we deal with every year into a Category 5 because of his words,” one of the sources noted.

Exactly. I said it back then and I say it again now. The last thing you want to do is endanger officers any worse than what they’re already about to face. Mamdani, for a while there, was essentially pouring gasoline on a raging fire.

The source continued, “We have to protect hotels, we have to protect wherever (dignitaries) go out to eat, we have to protect everything. Having the mayor say, ‘Go ahead and protest, and he should be arrested’…is unfair to your own cops.”

So of course he’s walking it back. Mamdani probably became aware that Netanyahu wasn’t going to cancel his visit, and had to actually…get this…sit down and think. Think about the unnecessary mayhem he would’ve caused his police force if he didn’t say anything.

That said, I do hope they’re prepared for the worst, just in case. Despite Mamdani downplaying his protest strategy, there will no doubt be thousands out there, insisting that Israel is the problem and Netanyahu is the driving factor. Mamdani may have calmed the tidal wave, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a backsplash coming.

I just hope he learns from this rather than posting a video based on his gut feeling. Maybe think ahead while you do your job, mayor.
