Los Angeles — Tilly Norwood, described as Hollywood’s first AI actor, is facing an on-camera test as the entertainment industry continues to debate whether artificial intelligence can truly perform work traditionally handled by human actors.

CNN entertainment correspondent Elizabeth Wagmeister interviewed Norwood alongside her creator, Eline van der Velden. The test was intended to determine how the AI performer would handle a live interaction instead of simply reciting material that had been prepared in advance.

The experiment illustrates both the capabilities and shortcomings of the technology. Norwood is able to engage in conversation and portray herself as an entertainment figure, but the exchange also prompts questions about whether an AI system can deliver the spontaneity, emotional understanding and creative instincts that audiences expect from human performers.

The emergence of synthetic actors has already caused concern among actors and other entertainment professionals, who worry that AI-generated performers could eventually take opportunities away from human talent. The broader debate also raises issues involving consent and compensation, as well as how performers’ likenesses and creative work can be used to develop artificial intelligence systems.

For that reason, Norwood’s appearance represents more than a technological novelty. It is a practical test of whether Hollywood and its audiences are prepared to embrace AI-generated performers as part of the mainstream entertainment industry.
