LOS ANGELES — Ivanna Ortiz, 36, is accused of opening fire outside Rihanna’s Los Angeles home in March while the singer and her partner, rapper A$AP Rocky, were inside an Airstream trailer parked in the driveway.
Police records cited by CNN allege that Ortiz was armed with a loaded AR-15 rifle and fired at least 10 rounds toward the property’s front gate. No one was injured in the shooting.
After the gunfire ended, Rihanna told investigators that she looked outside and noticed bullet holes in the trailer’s glass. She then realized she had been standing directly in the path of the gunfire.
Ortiz has pleaded not guilty. While in custody, she has undergone mental health evaluations. She is facing charges that include attempted murder, assault with a semiautomatic weapon and shooting at an inhabited dwelling or camper.
An examination of court documents, police reports and interviews with people who knew Ortiz describes what friends and relatives characterized as a major change in her behavior during the years leading up to the alleged attack.
Ortiz also allegedly developed an intense fixation on Rihanna. Videos apparently posted by Ortiz repeatedly referenced the singer, including claims that Rihanna wanted to harm her.
Ortiz is scheduled to return to court on September 29 for another competency hearing. If convicted, she could face up to life in state prison.
