President Donald Trump named Adam Telle acting secretary of the Army late Thursday, saying the appointment takes effect “immediately” as the United States continues military operations involving Iran and maintains substantial Army resources across the Middle East.
Trump announced the move on Truth Social, describing Telle as “a Great Patriot, who is respected by all.”
Telle currently serves as assistant secretary of the Army for civil works and will now assume responsibility for overseeing the nation’s largest military service in an acting capacity.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth publicly welcomed the appointment shortly after Trump’s announcement.
“Huge congrats to Adam. Strong and whip smart. He is indeed a great Patriot — and will be an immediate asset to the @USArmy,” Hegseth said.
As acting Army secretary, Telle will become the senior civilian official responsible for leading the Department of the Army and overseeing its day-to-day administration, budget and organizational affairs.
His elevation comes during a period of heightened demands on the service, with the United States still engaged in conflict with Iran and Army personnel and resources distributed across the Middle East.
Telle succeeds Dan Driscoll, who left the position Monday after approximately 18 months in the job.
According to an Associated Press report, Telle has spent more than two decades working for Republican senators and previously served in the White House during Trump’s first administration.
During that period, he served as Trump’s chief liaison to the Senate, giving him extensive experience working between the executive branch and Congress.
Telle’s appointment places a longtime Republican congressional and administration official at the head of the Army during a period when military readiness, overseas deployments and management of the service’s extensive budget and personnel structure remain central responsibilities.
Trump’s decision makes clear that Telle’s transition into the acting secretary role is immediate, allowing the Army to move forward under new civilian leadership just days after Driscoll’s departure.
