Multiple people were wounded Wednesday afternoon in a shooting in downtown Minneapolis, including two members of the Minneapolis Police Department, prompting a large law-enforcement response and warnings for the public to stay clear of the area.
The City of Minneapolis confirmed that several people had been injured in the shooting and that two of those wounded were Minneapolis police officers.
Officials had not released the total number of people injured or details about the conditions of the victims as of Wednesday afternoon.
The Minneapolis Police Department advised residents and others in the downtown area to remain away from the scene while officers continued responding.
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said state public-safety personnel had also been deployed to assist local authorities.
“State officials are on the ground to support local law enforcement and we will share more information as it becomes available,” Walz said on X. “Grateful to law enforcement actively working to ensure the safety of our neighbors in Downtown Minneapolis this afternoon. Minnesota is praying for our first responders.”
The circumstances leading to the gunfire, including who opened fire and whether a suspect had been identified or taken into custody, were not immediately disclosed.
Authorities also had not provided information about where specifically in downtown Minneapolis the shooting began or whether the two officers were wounded while responding to the initial incident.
The involvement of police officers and multiple additional victims brought state officials into the response as local law enforcement worked to secure the area and determine the extent of the violence.
Walz said his public safety team was actively involved and indicated that additional information would be released as authorities learned more.
For the time being, officials were asking the public to avoid the affected portion of downtown Minneapolis so law enforcement and emergency personnel could continue their work without interference.
The shooting remained an active and developing situation Wednesday afternoon, with the number and condition of the wounded, the identity of any suspect and the sequence of events still awaiting clarification from authorities.
