President Donald Trump on Friday established a new military academy dedicated to preparing Americans for service in the U.S. Space Force, expanding the institutional foundation of the military branch he created during his first administration.
Trump signed an executive order establishing the U.S. Space Academy, positioning the new institution alongside the nation’s existing military service academies as the Space Force continues to grow.
The academy will focus on educating and training future Space Force personnel, including service members, engineers and civilian operators needed for increasingly ambitious American military and commercial activities beyond Earth.
Trump said the rapid expansion of both the Space Force and the private space industry has created a need for a new generation of highly specialized personnel.
“Given the rapid growth of the Space Force and the commercial space industry, and the expansion of our ambitions to the moon and far beyond the moon … it’s clear that we will need to educate and train an entire generation of skilled service members, engineers and civil operators,” Trump said during the announcement.
“That’s a big deal,” he added.
Trump compared the envisioned Space Academy to the established service academies that have traditionally trained officers for other branches of the U.S. military, including the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis.
The new institution represents another major step in the development of the Space Force, which Trump established during his first administration.
Its creation marked the first establishment of a new branch of the U.S. armed forces in decades.
The Space Academy will now provide a dedicated educational pipeline for Americans preparing to serve in that branch as the military’s responsibilities in space expand.
Trump tied the decision not only to military requirements but also to the growth of the commercial space sector and the country’s broader plans for exploration beyond Earth.
His remarks pointed specifically to U.S. ambitions involving the moon and missions “far beyond the moon,” suggesting the academy is intended to develop personnel for a long-term expansion of American space capabilities rather than only immediate Space Force staffing needs.
The executive order establishes the framework for a military academy designed specifically around those emerging demands.
Like West Point and Annapolis, the U.S. Space Academy is intended to prepare future personnel for specialized service while providing the technical education needed for increasingly complex operations.
The move also further institutionalizes the Space Force years after Trump created the branch, giving it its own planned academy dedicated to developing future generations of military and technical leaders.
With Friday’s order, the administration is moving to build the educational infrastructure needed to support a service branch whose mission is expected to grow alongside advances in military, civilian and commercial space activity.
