The New York Rangers finished in last place last season in the Metropolitan Division with a 34-39-7 record with 77 points. There is no way that New York could get themselves out of a hole anytime soon. Mike Sullivan was the new head coach last season, but many of the Rangers problems rely on general manager Chris Drury. He has been the general manager since the 2021-2022 NHL season.

They have not won a Stanley Cup title since the 1993-1994 season against the Vancouver Canucks in seven games. The Rangers have missed the playoffs the last two seasons and many wonder why Drury still has a job in the front office. New York could very well miss the playoffs for the third straight season. There could be a chance that this franchise could finally clean out everything after the 2026-2027 NHL season if the Rangers were to miss the playoffs for the third consecutive season.

Dom Luszczyszyn of the Athletic wrote about the NHL front-office confidence rankings entering the 2026-2027 NHL season. The fans are wondering how good the teams will be as the season approaches. Well, the Rangers front office was ranked 32nd on this list as the 2026-2027 NHL season approaches.

The public and the fanbase are not confident in Drury doing many things right and they got an overall grade of a D. Luszczyszyn said,

“There seems to be at least some recognition that the prior emphasis on sandpaper at the expense of skill has not worked, but I fear the moves the team has made to pivot (including trading multiple future first rounders) could blow up in their faces unless they turn things around really quickly.”
“At this point Drury will do anything to keep his job, including trading draft capital to put together a team that won’t finish last in the East. Terrible long-term building which won’t result in any success.”

This team needs a major overhaul in player development. Fans realize that they have not drafted well even though they have had several top selections in the NHL Draft. Kaapo Kakko and Alexis Lafrieniere never panned out with the Rangers, and this is why their development has been awful. If they were not drafted by the Rangers, they would have panned out in other places than New York.
