President Donald Trump traveled to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, on Friday to rally Republican voters behind Darline Graham ahead of her runoff election against Rep. Ralph Norman for the GOP nomination in the state’s special U.S. Senate race.
Graham, the sister of the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, advanced from the Republican special-election primary earlier this month and will face Norman on Aug. 25.
Trump endorsed Graham last month, throwing his support behind her campaign to succeed her brother.
“Darline, who comes from an absolutely incredible family, has been a WINNER all of her life and, should she accept, has my Complete and Total Endorsement in the Special Election for U.S. Senate in South Carolina — SHE WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN. RUN, DARLINE, RUN! President DONALD J. TRUMP” – Trump said last month.
Trump’s endorsement was also published in a Truth Social post.
Supporters began gathering ahead of Friday’s Myrtle Beach event despite sweltering temperatures as Trump joined Graham on the campaign trail in the closing days before the runoff.
The Myrtle Beach rally was streamed live as the president sought to mobilize Republican voters for Graham before Tuesday’s contest.
The special election follows the death of Sen. Lindsey Graham last month after what was described as a brief and sudden illness.
According to information released by Graham’s office following the medical examination, the preliminary findings identified the cause of death as cardiovascular.
“The preliminary examination findings were: Aortic Dissection due to Arteriosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease,” Graham’s office said, according to the medical examiner.
Darline Graham’s advancement to the runoff has placed the Graham family back at the center of South Carolina Republican politics only weeks after the senator’s death.
Norman, a Republican member of the U.S. House, now stands between Graham and the party’s nomination in the special election.
Trump’s appearance Friday gives Graham the backing of the Republican president at a critical point in the abbreviated campaign, following his declaration last month that she had his “Complete and Total Endorsement.”
The winner of the Aug. 25 runoff will secure the Republican nomination in the special election to fill South Carolina’s vacant U.S. Senate seat.
