Defenseman Landon DuPont is going to be the big prize in the 2027 NHL Draft for many NHL franchises who need a franchise altering defenseman. In the 2025 NHL Draft, Matthew Schafer was the number one overall pick by the New York Islanders, and he was a defenseman for the Erie Otters. Schafer appears to be a generational talent. Well, DuPont appears to be a potential generational talent as well.

DuPont for the last two seasons played for the Everett Silvertips in the WHL. He is only 17 years old. DuPont is 5’11” and weighs 183 lbs. During 63 games with Everett last season, he scored 18 goals and recorded 55 assists, along with a plus/minus rating 59. In 18 playoff games with the Silvertips, he scored five goals and recorded 18 assists. His plus/minus during the playoffs with Everett was 20.

Rachel Kryshak of espn.com talked about the potential top prospects in the 2027 NHL Draft. DuPont will not be playing for Everett this season. He is going to be playing for the Michigan Wolverines at the NCAA level. This is the route that Gavin McKenna decided to take after leaving the Medicine Hat Tigers in the WHL for the Penn State Nittany Lions in the NCAA level as well.
Kryshak said about DuPont potentially being the number one overall pick in the 2027 NHL Draft,
“The consensus to be the top overall pick going into the season, DuPont is headed to Ann Arbor to play for the Michigan Wolverines after racking up more than a few scoring records in the WHL.
At 5-foot-11, DuPont is shorter than NHL teams prefer for their defenders, but there was no denying his role in Everett’s WHL championship last season, averaging more than 25 minutes per game. Michigan has developed quite a few top defenders over the past decade, and DuPont will be a key piece of the Wolverines blue line with his play-driving ability, play off the puck and ability to control the pace of play.
As with many other players granted exceptional status, his game gets picked apart and overanalyzed more than any other player in the draft class. There is no denying the talent, and if DuPont looks good in the NCAA, he should cement himself as the No. 1 pick.”
He is from Calgary, Alberta. There is a chance that the Calgary Flames are not very good in 2026-2027 as well. If the Flames could get the number one overall pick in the 2027 NHL Draft, there is no doubt that DuPont could be playing for his hometown team. However, he will be first focused on getting better with Michigan at the college level.
