The beauty, mystery, and raw energy of our blue planet are taking center stage as the Ocean Photographer of the Year 2026 officially unveils its stunning finalists. Presented by Oceanographic and Blancpain, this prestigious global competition brings together thousands of extraordinary images captured by the world’s finest ocean photographers. From sweeping drone views and rugged coastal vistas to intimate underwater perspectives, the shortlisted works celebrate the ocean in all its complexity, wonder, and vitality.

Astonishing Encounters in the Wild

This year’s wildlife imagery showcases the natural drama of marine life in breathtaking detail. Standout finalists captured unforgettable moments of instinct and connection, including two orcas working in tandem to carry away a humpback whale calf, a scorpionfish mid-meal devouring a lizardfish, and an octopus extending its specialized mating arm in a successful courtship display.

Revealing the Ocean's Hidden Worlds

New for 2026, the competition introduced the "Ocean Unseen: Hidden Worlds" category, turning the spotlight onto the smallest and least-glimpsed inhabitants of the sea. These micro-perspectives reveal the vital architecture supporting entire marine ecosystems, featuring scenes such as spawning Christmas tree worms, a tiny Braun's pughead pipefish peeking through coral polyps, and parasitic copepods living on the eye of a giant black sea bass.

Adventure, Hope, and Human Connection

The human element shines brightly across the Adventure and Human Connection categories. Viewers are treated to the thrill of freedivers plunging into deep waters, surfers navigating comically timed wipeouts, and inspiring community efforts like puffin rehabilitation centres and seagrass restoration projects. Meanwhile, the Conservation Hope category illuminates resilience and recovery through vibrant, thriving kelp forests, scientific divers measuring hammerhead sharks with lasers, and lab-reared baby lobsters being prepared for release back into the wild.

As Ocean Photographer of the Year founder and director Will Harrison shared, these artists have produced work of extraordinary courage, surfacing the vital stories our planet most needs to hear. With category winners and the overall titleholder set to be announced this September, this collection stands as a moving tribute to the wonders beneath the surface.
