A senior leader of the Democratic Socialists of America in New York City is facing scrutiny over his personal housing situation after a report found that he lives in a Brooklyn home purchased by his parents and now valued at approximately $1.5 million.

Gustavo Gordillo, 38, serves as co-chair of the New York City chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America and has publicly promoted socialist and anti-capitalist policies.

According to The New York Post, Gordillo lives in a nearly 2,000-square-foot, two-story row house in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood that was purchased by his parents in 2019 for just under $1 million.

Property records cited by the Post show the home was acquired through Chucuito LLC.

The property has since undergone substantial renovations, according to plans filed with the borough in 2023.

Those changes reportedly included work to the front facade, new landscaping, interior renovations and the addition of two decks — one on the roof and another near the front entrance.

The controversy has drawn attention because of Gordillo’s political role and the DSA’s criticism of wealth concentration, capitalism and private-property structures.

A social media post highlighting the report circulated Tuesday as the details of the property became public.

The Post characterized Gordillo as enjoying a comparatively affluent living arrangement while advancing a political agenda critical of the wealthy and private property ownership.

One renter in the neighborhood, Faith Smith, 36, criticized what she viewed as a contradiction between Gordillo’s politics and his personal circumstances.

“I wish my family could afford to buy me a million-dollar home,” Smith said.

“It’s a rich kid,’’ she added. “That’s basically people who don’t have to deal with the struggles we have to deal with.”

Gordillo is a Yale University graduate and has become a prominent figure within New York City’s DSA organization.

The home sits on a tree-lined block in Bed-Stuy, an area that has undergone significant gentrification.

According to the Post, the property was originally purchased by Gordillo’s parents through Chucuito LLC for just under $1 million before undergoing a series of upgrades.

The report described the arrangement as politically notable because Gordillo has helped promote an ideology frequently critical of concentrated wealth and property ownership.

The available information, however, concerns the source of the property purchase and Gordillo’s residence there; it does not establish wrongdoing in connection with the transaction.

The issue instead centers on the contrast being drawn between Gordillo’s personal circumstances and the economic positions associated with the DSA.

With the home now reportedly worth about $1.5 million, the disclosure is likely to intensify scrutiny of Gordillo as one of the most visible leaders of New York City’s socialist movement.
