The Republican National Committee is opening its upcoming midterm convention to members of the public through a nationwide ticket lottery, giving Americans a chance to attend the two-day September gathering in Dallas and potentially receive VIP seating near the front of the event.

The ticket request system went live Aug. 15 at gopconvention.com, where applicants can request admission for Sept. 9, Sept. 10 or both days.

Organizers say the event will be the largest Republican convention of any kind since 2016, with total capacity exceeding 20,000 people, including members of the media.

Applicants selected through the lottery are scheduled to be notified Sept. 4 and will have 24 hours to claim their tickets.

Some winners will receive special VIP front-row access, while other ticket holders will be able to attend convention programming that includes an appearance by President Donald Trump.

The RNC described the public lottery as the first effort of its kind to open a party convention to Americans on this scale.

Beyond the main convention proceedings, attendees will be able to enter a “victory plaza” featuring entertainment, food, drinks and surprise guests.

Organizers are presenting the plaza as a broader celebration of the United States designed to create a festival-style environment around the political event.

The committee is also recruiting volunteers.

Organizers are seeking 750 volunteers per day from the Dallas area, with the volunteer application process also opening Aug. 15.

The convention is expected to serve as a major messaging platform for Republicans heading into the midterm elections.

Party officials plan to emphasize what they describe as a contrast between Republican “common sense” policies and Democratic positions they characterize as “crazy.”

Republicans are expected to highlight the Working Families Tax Cuts, tighter border enforcement, efforts to combat fraud and what the party describes as a historic decline in crime among its recent accomplishments.

Convention messaging is also expected to attack what Republicans describe as a socialist shift within the Democratic Party.

Organizers plan to cite controversial statements or positions attributed to Democrats, including claims that there are six sexes, that the United States deserved the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and that Thanksgiving should be canceled.

Those arguments will be presented as part of the Republican Party’s broader effort to define the stakes of the midterm elections.

The Dallas gathering comes as Trump’s political operation and Republican strategists are also refining campaign messages they believe will resonate with voters.

Trump advisers James Blair and Tony Fabrizio, along with Senate Leadership Fund Executive Director Alex Latcham, presented polling to Republican senators and aides Aug. 5 identifying several messages that produced particularly strong results.

According to the presentation, Republicans held a 46-point advantage when advocating greater transparency surrounding health insurers’ profits, rejected claims and delays in patient care.

A proposal to ban members of Congress from trading stocks produced a 44-point advantage, while messaging centered on combating fraud generated a 38-point advantage.

Support for the SAVE America Act produced a 14-point advantage, according to the polling presentation.

Blair also indicated that political spending from both MAGA Inc. and the Republican National Committee is expected to begin moving into individual midterm contests.

MAGA Inc. has more than $400 million available, and Trump has said he controls the super PAC and intends to use its resources to help Republican candidates.

The RNC separately has approximately $128 million in cash on hand.

The Democratic National Committee, by comparison, has approximately $16 million available while carrying about $18 million in debt.

Republicans could also have greater flexibility in deploying party funds following a recent Supreme Court ruling that allows the RNC to spend without limits while coordinating with candidates.

Taken together, the party’s financial position, polling strategy and Dallas convention are expected to form major pieces of the Republican effort to mobilize voters and shape the political debate ahead of the midterms.

The public ticket lottery represents another element of that strategy by allowing supporters outside the traditional delegate and party structure to participate directly in the convention.

Americans interested in attending can request tickets for one or both convention days through the RNC convention website, with successful applicants scheduled to learn whether they were selected on Sept. 4.
