When high schoolers dream of their perfect prom, they usually envision shimmering satin, sequins, and tulle. Seventeen-year-old Sophie Chai, however, opted for a much stickier medium. The Union City, California student and recent James Logan High School graduate traded traditional fabrics for 35 rolls of duct tape, crafting a breathtaking prom gown that not only took the internet by storm but recently earned her the ultimate victory. Out of a highly competitive pool of 160 entries, Chai was officially crowned the winner of the "Best Dress" category in the Duck Tape Stuck at Prom Scholarship Contest, taking home the grand prize of a $10,000 scholarship.

A Five-Month Creative Marathon

Chai’s journey began back in January when she was actively searching for college scholarships. Stumbling upon the unique 20-year-old contest—which challenges students to design and wear original prom attire using Duck Brand duct tape—she immediately enlisted her mother's help. According to an interview with KTVU FOX 2, Chai excitedly told her mom about the scholarship, and the supportive pair rushed straight to Michael's to stock up on tape.

What followed was an awe-inspiring, 250-hour labor of love spanning five months. To bring her strawberry shortcake-inspired vision to life, Chai meticulously built a metal wire petticoat to form the dress's voluminous shape. She then covered massive sheets of fabric in pink and white duct tape to drape elegantly over the frame. Her attention to detail was extraordinary, as she shaped numerous bows, individually crafted pieces of "icing," and engineered a custom duct tape corset to attach to the bodice. To complete the striking ensemble, Chai also fashioned matching heels, a headband, and a thematic prop fork.

Slicing Through Societal Standards

Beneath the sweet, confectionary exterior of her gown lies a profound and empowering message. Chai shared with KTVU FOX 2 that the inspiration for her design stemmed from her personal struggles with conventional beauty standards and the restrictive expectations of femininity.

She deliberately chose a strawberry cake theme to symbolize the immense pressure many young women face to appear perfectly "pretty, polished and decorated like a strawberry cake". The giant handcrafted fork carries an equally heavy meaning, serving as a physical representation of how consuming these societal expectations can feel to girls who believe they must look a certain way just to be considered feminine enough. Through this artistic endeavor, the rising San Jose State University freshman discovered a new sense of self, realizing she could define femininity on her own terms and feel delightfully "girly" without forcing herself into a pre-existing mold.

Overcoming Hurdles to a Grand Prize Victory

Constructing the dress was only half the battle. When it came time for her official photography session, Chai faced a hilarious but daunting logistical hurdle: the gown was simply too massive to fit through her front door. Resourceful as ever, she had to partially deconstruct the dress, carefully load it into her dad's van, and transport it to a local park before putting it all back together for the camera.

Her immense dedication paid off in the best way possible. After being selected as one of the few finalists, her stunning photos amassed massive viral attention on social media. That overwhelming wave of public support ultimately propelled her to first place, securing the $10,000 scholarship just in time for her first semester of college.

For Chai, the enthusiastic community response has been incredibly heartwarming. She is especially touched by the unwavering support of her parents, who have proudly bragged about her incredible duct tape gown to their coworkers. As she heads off to a bright future this fall, Sophie Chai has proven that with enough imagination, resilience, and a few dozen rolls of duct tape, you can create something truly beautiful, boldly claim your own narrative, and come out an absolute winner.
