Former President Joe Biden’s prostate cancer has spread beyond its original site and into his bones, according to his son Hunter Biden, who said the disease is now causing considerable pain and has become physically debilitating.
Hunter Biden discussed his father’s condition during a wide-ranging BBC interview broadcast late Friday, becoming emotional as he described the impact of the illness on the former president and their family. “The cancer has spread, metastasized into his bones and further,” he said. “It’s very painful and it’s very debilitating in many respects.”
Joe Biden, now 83, disclosed his prostate cancer diagnosis in May 2025, less than four months after leaving the White House. He had been the oldest person to serve as president of the United States, and questions about his age and fitness became a major political issue throughout his four years in office.
Those concerns intensified during the 2024 presidential campaign after Biden struggled during a debate against Donald Trump, who ultimately succeeded him in the White House. Biden later abandoned his bid for another term, and he and members of his administration have since faced persistent criticism and allegations that aides concealed the extent of his age-related difficulties while he was president.
Hunter Biden said his father’s cancer diagnosis and subsequent decline have been difficult for the family to watch. “It’s really sad to watch,” Biden said. “The only thing that I’d say about my dad, about his health right now, is I wish he would complain more, because it’s not good.”
Despite the progression of the disease, Hunter Biden said the former president has continued to make public appearances and engage with political and civic issues. He described his father as still being “out there” and unwilling to withdraw completely from public life because of his continued attachment to the country and the issues he has focused on throughout his career.
“He’s still doing his thing,” Hunter Biden said. “He so believes in this country.”
The former president is also preparing to release a memoir titled “Promise Me, America” following the midterm elections. The planned publication comes as Biden continues to speak publicly despite what his son described as an increasingly painful and debilitating stage of his cancer.
