A German court sentenced a 25-year-old Afghan immigrant to life in prison Thursday for driving a car into a labor union demonstration in Munich in 2025, killing two people, including a 2-year-old girl, and injuring dozens more.
The defendant, identified only as Farhad N. under Germany’s privacy laws, was convicted of two counts of murder and 23 counts of attempted murder, the Associated Press reported, citing German news organizations.
The attack occurred Feb. 13, 2025, when Farhad N. drove into a crowd participating in a union demonstration in Munich. Authorities arrested him shortly afterward.
In addition to the two fatalities, 44 people suffered serious or life-threatening injuries, according to authorities.
The court determined that Farhad N. carried “particularly serious” guilt, a designation that makes him ineligible for the possibility of release after 15 years, the period when many prisoners serving life sentences in Germany may otherwise seek parole.
Judges found that he carried out the attack in an effort to prove himself to be a “good Muslim.”
The Munich car-ramming was among several violent attacks in Germany involving immigrants that intensified public concern over security and immigration policy.
