Irish musician and actor Glen Hansard, best known for starring in the acclaimed film “Once,” died Wednesday after a motorcycle crash on the outskirts of Dublin. He was 56.
The single-vehicle accident occurred shortly before 4:30 a.m., according to reports. Emergency personnel treated Hansard at the scene, but he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Hansard achieved worldwide recognition through “Once,” the Dublin-set film in which he portrayed a struggling street musician whose life changes after he meets another artist, played by Markéta Irglová. Their characters develop a powerful connection through songwriting and performance as they navigate the city’s streets and pursue their musical ambitions.
The film became an international success despite its modest production, earning approximately $23 million at the global box office, according to Rolling Stone.
Hansard’s work on the movie also brought him one of the entertainment industry’s highest honors. He won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2008 for “Falling Snow,” which appeared in “Once.”
His performance in the film introduced his music to audiences far beyond Ireland and established him as both a compelling screen presence and a widely recognized singer-songwriter. The movie’s success was driven in large part by its intimate portrayal of two musicians finding companionship and creative purpose through their shared love of music.
Hansard’s death brings an abrupt end to a career that connected Irish street music with international cinema and earned recognition from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Authorities had not released additional details about the cause of the crash or whether any other circumstances contributed to the accident.
