Three women, including one who was pregnant, were hospitalized Monday after a man armed with two knives attacked pedestrians near a metro station in northern Paris, according to French officials and local media reports.
The victims, ages 19, 24 and 36, were assaulted near the Porte de Clichy station in the French capital’s 17th arrondissement, Le Parisien reported. Geoffroy Boulard, mayor of the arrondissement, confirmed on X that a pregnant woman was among those injured.
Two of the women were in critical condition and the third was seriously injured, according to a separate account published by Le Figaro.
“They were taken care of by emergency services and transported to the hospital,” a spokesman for the Paris police prefecture said.
An off-duty police officer reportedly witnessed the attacker carrying two knives and assaulting a pedestrian. The officer summoned reinforcements before helping apprehend the suspect, according to Le Figaro.
Video circulated on social media appeared to show several people restraining the suspected attacker on the ground. The man could reportedly be heard saying, “Allah commanded me.”
Despite statements attributed to the suspect, authorities had not classified the attack as terrorism at the time of reporting. A source close to the investigation told Le Parisien: “The guy said Allah sent me to kill women. But no, he’s crazy.”
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said investigators were proceeding carefully as they evaluated what prompted the attack.
He said he remained “very cautious about the motive of this violent act,” adding that the suspect had been heard “uttering incoherent statements.”
The suspect was identified as a 31-year-old man, though authorities had not publicly released additional information about his identity or background. Le Parisien reported that he “apparently does not have all his mental faculties.”
Authorities continued investigating the sequence of events, the suspect’s mental condition and whether his statements reflected an ideological motive or psychiatric instability.
The Paris attack occurred two days after a vehicle was driven into crowds attending an annual LGBTQ+ Pride Parade in Berlin, killing one woman and injuring 29 people.
German authorities characterized the Berlin incident as an Islamist terrorist attack. The suspect in that case, 21-year-old Abdul Ballut, who was described as being of Lebanese heritage, was shot and killed by police Sunday after a 20-hour manhunt in the German capital.
