Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Will Grier is staying in the NFL after retiring from playing earlier this month, transitioning into a new role with the organization.

Grier has joined the Cowboys’ coaching staff as an offensive assistant, according to a source. The move comes after Grier initially had an opportunity to join Dallas’ staff earlier in the offseason but instead signed with the Carolina Panthers before the NFL Draft. He remained with Carolina until announcing his retirement from football on July 15, 2026.

After stepping away from playing, Grier returned to Dallas in a coaching role, where he will work with the Cowboys’ offensive staff. His familiarity with the organization and experience as a quarterback were key factors in the team bringing him back.

Grier spent the 2025 season on the Cowboys’ practice squad after rejoining the team in 2024. He originally became a member of Dallas in 2021 after the Cowboys claimed him off waivers from the Panthers. He remained with the team through the 2022 season, moving between the active roster and practice squad.

Dallas released Grier in 2023 after the team acquired quarterback Trey Lance in a trade with the San Francisco 49ers. He later joined the Philadelphia Eagles, where he spent part of the 2024 season on their practice squad and earned a Super Bowl ring.

The Panthers selected Grier in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft out of West Virginia. During his rookie season, he started two games, completing 28 of 52 passes for 228 yards while throwing four interceptions and no touchdowns.

Despite limited opportunities on the field, Grier developed a close relationship with Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott during their time together in Dallas. Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer believes Grier’s offensive knowledge and understanding of the quarterback position can help him build a successful coaching career.

Grier will now begin the next chapter of his football journey, bringing his playing experience and offensive perspective to the Cowboys’ coaching staff.
