Yu Team Moments: Liu Ye’s Heartfelt Thoughts
Liu Ye was a past life of Yu Qian, Yu Menglong's Secondary Soul. We asked him some questions about several of the life choices Liu Ye made in “The Saga of Princess Jieyou.”
Yu En Transmission: Did Liu Ye ever regret not confessing his feelings earlier, during the journey to escort the princess to her political marriage — given how hard the rest of his life turned out to be because of it?
Yu Qian: Liu Ye's role was to accompany the princess on her journey to the marriage alliance. If the alliance had failed because of any private romantic entanglement, you can imagine how many lives would have been devastated as a result, down the line.
For him to confess his feelings to the princess would have meant sabotaging the alliance between the two nations, and betraying the trust the emperor had placed in him. By the values of that era, he would have died before doing such a thing.
The only possible outcome of confessing to the princess would have been being sent back to the Central Plains in disgrace — if he wasn't executed outright.
Liu Ye was reserved by nature to begin with. If the princess herself hadn't noticed how he felt, he would never have spoken of it in his entire life.
But he took real comfort in the fact that, in that lifetime, the princess did notice, did understand what he truly felt inside, and still cherished him just as much all the same — otherwise his life would have been far too lonely and painful.
This is also why Liu Ye treasured his bonds of loyalty and affection with Weng Gui Mi, the princess, and Lady Feng so deeply — because in that lifetime, they were the ones who truly understood his heart.
Yu En Transmission: Weng Gui Mi won the princess's lifelong love because he confessed his feelings to her the moment they met. If Liu Ye had confessed before Weng Gui Mi did, would history have turned out differently?
Yu Qian: Actually, when Weng Gui Mi first confessed to the princess, Liu Ye initially saw it as an extremely irresponsible act, and even felt some hostility and misunderstanding toward him at first. This wasn't rivalry between men — it was because Liu Ye felt Weng Gui Mi was jeopardizing their shared mission.
But he later came to understand that the bond between Weng Gui Mi and the princess was actually a key factor in helping them accomplish that mission.
In truth, the connections between people are all life scripts arranged in advance by the higher realms — they would never have turned out any differently simply because one person confessed before another.
The bond between Weng Gui Mi and the princess in that lifetime — and indeed across all their lifetimes together — was arranged by the higher realms, just as the hardship Liu Ye endured in that lifetime was also arranged by the higher realms.
Liu Ye was not a cultivator, so he wouldn't have had that strong a sense of mission on his own. Without this layer being arranged for him — that is, having him fall deeply in love with the princess in that lifetime — there would have been no way to ensure he'd stay by her side for the rest of his life as her devoted protector, helping her fulfill her mission.
This life script was also something he himself agreed to before being reincarnated.
Yu En Transmission: Why didn't Liu Ye tell the princess about Weng Gui Mi's dying wish?
Yu Qian: The princess's heart held only Weng Gui Mi, and that was never going to change, right up to her death — Liu Ye understood this completely.
What's more, he needed to remain true to the wife who had stood by him through life and death for so many years. When a woman is willing to make that level of sacrifice out of love for a man, how could someone as devoted and loyal as Liu Ye not be moved by it?
What people of that era valued most was not private romantic feeling, but duty and loyalty — especially between husband and wife.
Morally corrupted modern people place private romantic feeling above everything else, but people of the past regarded it as lighter than a goose feather; to them, that was what it meant to act with honor.
