Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., said Thursday that New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani could eventually take an action serious enough to result in his arrest and transfer to the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay.

Tuberville made the remarks during an interview with conservative commentator Benny Johnson, offering no specific allegation of criminal conduct but predicting that Mamdani would ultimately cross a line that prompted federal action.

“He will sooner or later, he will do something more stupid than what’s he’s done where we’ll finally say ‘enough’s enough,’” Tuberville said during the interview.

“We’ll put the handcuffs on him and get him the hell out of here. And send him to Gitmo,” he added.

Tuberville also accused Mamdani of hostility toward the United States, saying the mayor “hates this country and wants to change it.”

The Alabama Republican did not identify a law he believed Mamdani had violated or explain what conduct could justify detention at Guantanamo Bay. His comments amounted to a political prediction and criticism rather than an announcement of any pending investigation or legal proceeding.

Guantanamo Bay has long housed detainees captured during U.S. counterterrorism operations and became closely associated with the country’s post-Sept. 11 war on terror. Tuberville’s suggestion that an elected American mayor could be sent there marked an unusually severe escalation in political rhetoric directed at Mamdani.
