The Washington Nationals have a 51-50 record this season. Washington is currently in the thick of the wild card race in the National League. Many people are wondering if the Nationals should be sellers, buyers, or stand pat at the MLB trade deadline on Monday, August 3rd. They could decide to make moves before then as well.

One player that could be traded for the Nationals is shortstop CJ Abrams. He is under contract for a couple of more seasons. Abrams is only 25 years old. He should be viewed as part of the long-time future for Washington. In 97 games played this season, he has a .275 batting average with 22 home runs and 72 RBIs, along with 15 stolen bases and four caught stolen bases. His on-base percentage is .350.

Mark Feinsand of mlb.com listed which players who could be potentially traded at the MLB trade deadline. He thinks that Abrams could be traded from Washington, but it will depend upon on what happens with the Nationals the next two weeks. Feinsand said,
“The Nationals are in a tricky spot; at 49-50 entering Sunday, they were only three games out of an NL Wild Card spot, so being a seller would be a bad sign to both the players in the clubhouse and the fan base. But first-year president of baseball operations Paul Toboni is also thinking long-term, and given the seasons both Abrams and Griffin are having, both would generate great interest if they were made available. How Washington plays over the next 10 days could be the deciding factor in the way Toboni approaches the Deadline.”
Even if Washington fell off a cliff, they should not trade Abrams because he should be a cornerstone piece for the long haul. The Nationals should find a way to give him a long-term contract. Outfielder James Wood should need one as well. The guy that Washington should trade if they fall off is right-handed pitcher Foster Griffin. Griffin has an expiring contract at the end of the MLB season.
