Boston homicide detectives are investigating the discovery of a body inside a residential property owned by the husband of Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., after officers responded to the home Saturday afternoon.
Police were dispatched to the house on Malta Street in Boston’s Mattapan neighborhood at 1:52 p.m. following “a report to investigate a person,” a department spokesperson told CBS News.
Officers found the person dead after entering the property, according to police.
Authorities had not released the person’s identity, the suspected cause or manner of death, or information about the circumstances leading to the discovery. The Boston Police Department’s homicide unit is investigating.
Images shared in an online report from the scene showed police activity and crime scene tape surrounding the property Saturday night.
City property records identify Pressley’s husband, Conan Harris, as the owner of the Malta Street residence, according to CBS News.
The two-story house was built in 1910 and contains seven bedrooms. Boston has assessed the property at $919,000.
Pressley and Harris do not live at the home. The residence is used as a rental property and is currently listed for sale with an asking price of $1.15 million.
Pressley’s office issued a statement after news of the investigation became public.
“The Congresswoman extends her deepest condolences to the impacted family,” a spokesperson said Saturday.
The office did not provide additional information about the deceased person, the property’s occupants or the ongoing police investigation.
Harris previously served 10 years in prison for drug trafficking before becoming involved in public-safety consulting, nonprofit leadership and advocacy for formerly incarcerated people.
He has been described by Pressley’s congressional office as an example of successful reentry into society following incarceration.
Harris worked as a safety consultant for the city of Boston and later served as executive director of the Boston branch of My Brother’s Keeper, a community outreach initiative.
According to Pressley’s website, Harris has advocated for people attempting to rebuild their lives after leaving prison.
Pressley was first elected to Congress in 2018. She and Harris married in 2014, years after he completed his prison sentence.
Police had not announced any arrests or identified a suspect as of the latest information provided. The homicide unit’s involvement does not by itself establish that the death has been formally ruled a homicide.
