The Democratic Socialists of America activist questioned whether the Declaration of Independence should remain the nation’s defining statement of principles as the United States approaches its 250th anniversary.

Activist Linda Sarsour called for Americans to consider creating a new national document reflecting contemporary progressive priorities during remarks delivered months before the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

Sarsour made the comments during a Working Families Party mass call in March 2026. Video of the discussion resurfaced as the United States prepared to commemorate its semiquincentennial, prompting criticism from conservative commentators and renewed scrutiny of Sarsour’s political influence in New York City.

According to details reported by BizPac Review, Sarsour framed the approaching anniversary as an opportunity for her generation to develop a document representing its own principles and political objectives.

“… the question historically is gonna be, what were we doing on the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence? What is our generation building?” Sarsour said.

She then characterized the nation’s founding document in terms of the race and sex of the men who drafted it.

“And as we know with the Declaration of Independence, really what it was, was a bunch of white guys 250 years ago who sat around and developed a document they called the Declaration of Independence,” she said.

Sarsour continued by asking whether activists should organize around a replacement statement that could attract support from millions of Americans outside traditional party structures.

“The question is, can we build something different? Do we have the audacity to sit around and say that we want to build a document that is our values and our principles, and bring millions of Americans around it and say to them, put the politics to the side, put the political parties to the side,” she said.

The remarks did not identify a completed replacement document or provide specific language that would be included in one. Instead, Sarsour presented the idea as a broader organizing project centered on progressive values and principles.

Canary Mission circulated the resurfaced video of Sarsour’s comments ahead of the anniversary. NewsNation host Katie Pavlich responded to the proposal by suggesting Sarsour “GTFO.”

Sarsour has been associated with Democratic Socialists of America-aligned political organizing and has been described as an accountability partner of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Critics cited the resurfaced comments as further evidence that activists connected to Mamdani favor replacing longstanding American institutions with policies rooted in socialist and progressive ideology.

The Declaration of Independence was adopted July 4, 1776, and formally announced the separation of the 13 colonies from Great Britain. Its assertion that “all men are created equal” became a central statement of American political philosophy, even though the country did not initially extend equal legal rights to all citizens.

Sarsour’s comments focused not on revising individual passages but on whether a new organizing document could be developed around the priorities of current left-wing movements. The remarks generated opposition from those who maintain that the Declaration’s principles should be preserved rather than replaced as the country marks 250 years since its adoption.
