In the fourth year of the Taichu era of Emperor Wu of Han (102 BCE), Princess Xijun — who had been sent in marriage alliance (和親, the practice of marrying imperial women to foreign rulers to secure peace) to the Wusun Kingdom — died of illness at the age of twenty-nine.

In truth, however, with the consent of her husband, the King of Wusun, Princess Xijun faked her death and secretly returned to the Central Plains, where she entered a Daoist temple to cultivate, and did not actually pass away until she was over seventy.

Meanwhile, the civil official who had accompanied Princess Xijun (Yu Menglong's Secondary Soul) remained behind in Wusun, recording the story of the next princess sent for marriage alliance.

An envoy who had come to the Han court reported Princess Xijun's death to Emperor Wu, and the emperor was overcome with grief.
