Imagine walking through a quiet forest and stumbling upon a towering, 15- to 30-foot-tall wooden giant. Since 2014, Danish artist Thomas Dambo has been bringing Scandinavian fairy tales to life by building colossal wooden trolls across the globe. Dambo, whose eclectic background includes working as a rapper, human beatbox, and street artist, has constructed more than 175 of these massive creatures. From the deep forests of Denmark to the scenic islands of the Puget Sound, these enchanting giants are transforming ordinary outdoor walks into magical adventures.

A Modern-Day Treasure Hunt

Instead of placing his art in traditional museums or easily accessible plazas, Dambo deliberately hides his colossal sculptures in lesser-known greenspaces and parks. He turns the experience into a riddle, encouraging people to awaken their senses and truly explore the natural world around them. Visitors are often guided by visual clues, such as brightly colored birdhouses, to find the hidden giants.

Speaking to FOX 13 Seattle, Dambo explained the philosophy behind his art by saying, "I make it a little bit like a treasure hunt". He hopes to inspire a sense of wonder in everyday places, noting, "Sometimes, we think adventure only awaits us if we travel in an airplane to the other side of the world, but actually, there is a lot of adventure to be found in your own backyard - you just have to go and find it".

Redefining Mythology Through Play

In ancient Norse literature, trolls were often depicted as violent monsters or fierce guardians of the wilderness. Dambo's modern creations, however, leave the darkness behind, taking inspiration from a friendlier, more playful brand of folklore. His trolls feature whimsical, interactive elements designed to delight visitors. For example, you might find a troll with giant earlobes meant to attract bird's nests, or one with a gaping mouth perfectly sized for children to scramble through.

The creativity of these installations knows no bounds, with unique stories tied to specific locations.

Built by Goofballs and Dreamers

One of the most inspiring aspects of Dambo's trolls is how they bring people together. Each sculpture is built entirely from discarded materials, such as old pallets, scrap wood, and local findings. But Dambo doesn't build them alone; the construction of these giants relies heavily on a community effort, drawing eager crowds of volunteers from all over the world.

People are deeply drawn to the joy and purpose of the work. Raven, a volunteer from Texas, told FOX 13 Seattle, "If I get invited on a tour like this, I'll drop everything". He perfectly summarized the joyful atmosphere of the build sites, adding, "We're just a bunch of goofballs that are just making stuff happen". Francisa Calderone, a volunteer originally from Chile, echoed this sentiment, stating, "It's fun to be part of something a bit bigger than what I normally do".

With over 175 trolls globally, no single person is likely to see them all, making each discovery feel like a rare and personal gift. Whether you are exploring the deep woods of the Pacific Northwest or wandering through a botanic garden in South Korea, Thomas Dambo's trolls serve as a beautiful reminder to keep our eyes open, embrace our inner child, and never stop hunting for magic in the world around us.
