Russia and Ukraine exchanged fresh waves of attacks overnight, leaving at least six people dead, including a child, and dozens injured across Ukraine, while Kyiv claimed its forces had inflicted significant damage on Russian maritime assets in the Sea of Azov.

The latest escalation underscores the intensifying nature of the more than three-year war, with both sides increasingly targeting critical infrastructure and strategic assets far from the front lines.

Ukrainian officials said Russian missile and drone attacks struck several regions during the night, causing civilian casualties and widespread destruction. Authorities reported that six people were killed and at least 29 others wounded in separate attacks on the Sumy, Kyiv and Odesa regions.

In the northeastern Sumy region, four people, including a child, lost their lives after two Russian guided glide bombs hit a densely populated civilian area.

Regional Governor Oleh Hryhorov said the strikes occurred while residents were present in the area, leading to heavy casualties and significant damage. Seventeen others were injured in the attack, several of whom remain in serious condition.

Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, also came under sustained bombardment. The State Emergency Service said missile and drone strikes wounded 11 people, including a child.

Explosions and fires were reported in several districts of the city, including Solomianskyi, Darnytskyi and Dniprovskyi, as emergency crews worked through the night to extinguish fires and rescue residents from damaged buildings.

In southern Ukraine, two people were killed after a Russian missile struck a building in the Odesa region. Regional Governor Oleh Kiper said another individual suffered shrapnel injuries during the attack.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia launched a massive overnight assault involving 12 missiles, including six ballistic missiles, along with 121 drones.

While Ukrainian air defenses managed to intercept or electronically suppress many of the incoming threats, Zelenskyy acknowledged that several ballistic missiles penetrated the country’s defenses and reached their intended targets.

The Ukrainian Air Force stated that air defense units shot down or disabled 111 drones and intercepted two missiles. However, direct strikes were recorded in at least 11 locations across the country, highlighting what Ukrainian officials continue to describe as critical shortages in advanced air defense systems.

Zelenskyy once again appealed to Ukraine’s international partners for additional military support, particularly systems capable of countering ballistic missile attacks, warning that civilian populations remain highly vulnerable to such strikes.

Meanwhile, Ukraine claimed it had carried out one of its most significant maritime operations in recent months, targeting Russian vessels in the Sea of Azov. According to Ukraine’s General Staff, overnight drone operations damaged 21 tankers involved in transporting oil and petroleum products. Kyiv also reported damage to four tugboats, two cargo ships and a dredging vessel.

The attacks form part of Ukraine’s broader strategy of targeting Russian energy infrastructure and logistical networks that support Moscow’s military operations.

Ukrainian drones have increasingly struck oil refineries, fuel depots and transport facilities deep inside Russian territory in recent months, aiming to weaken Russia’s ability to sustain its war effort.

Those operations have reportedly contributed to fuel shortages in several parts of Russia, creating logistical challenges and placing additional pressure on domestic supplies.

Russian authorities, however, disputed Ukraine’s assessment of the maritime attacks. Russian officials said only four vessels had been affected and reported that one person was killed during Ukrainian drone strikes. Moscow did not provide detailed information regarding the extent of the damage.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said its forces had targeted Ukrainian drone production facilities in Kyiv and port infrastructure in the Odesa region, specifically mentioning the ports of Izmail and Chornomorsk as military objectives.

The ministry also claimed that Russian air defenses intercepted and destroyed 178 Ukrainian drones overnight across eight Russian regions, as well as over Russian-occupied Crimea and the waters of the Black and Azov seas.

The latest exchange of attacks highlights the increasingly long-range nature of the conflict, with both nations intensifying strikes on strategic infrastructure while civilian areas continue to bear the consequences of the war.

As the fighting shows no signs of easing, the growing frequency of missile and drone attacks has raised fresh concerns about regional stability and the humanitarian toll of the conflict, particularly as both sides seek to gain strategic advantages ahead of any potential diplomatic efforts to end the war.
