TEHRAN, Iran — Iran’s newly installed supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, pledged Saturday to avenge the death of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, while Iranian officials also held talks with Oman on regional security and the safe movement of ships through the Strait of Hormuz.
Mojtaba Khamenei issued a series of posts on X promising retaliation against those involved in the Feb. 28 joint U.S.-Israeli airstrikes that killed the 86-year-old former supreme leader at his compound in Tehran.
“We pledge to avenge your pure blood and the blood of all the martyrs of these two [recent] wars by taking revenge against the criminal, disgraceful murderers,” Khamenei wrote. “This vengeance is what our nation is demanding, and this must definitely be done.”
He said Iranian authorities had documented the identities of those responsible across multiple levels of command.
“The criminal, disgraceful murderers of the martyred Leader, whose names are fully documented from the highest to the lowest ranks, will carry their dream of a peaceful death in bed to the grave,” Khamenei wrote.
The threats followed a week of official funeral ceremonies for Ali Khamenei. Iranian state media reported that more than 40 million people participated in some portion of the commemorations.
Mojtaba Khamenei thanked those who attended the events in Iran and Iraq.
“I extend my heartfelt gratitude for the incredible, enemy-shattering, and historic turnout of tens of millions of people across Iran and Iraq,” he wrote.
The revenge pledge came as Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met Saturday with Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi for discussions that included bilateral relations and security in the Strait of Hormuz.
The narrow waterway lies between Iran and Oman and remains central to regional shipping and energy transportation.
According to a summary posted to Araghchi’s Telegram channel, the two ministers discussed procedures for allowing vessels to travel safely through the strait.
“Araghchi and Albusaidi also exchanged views on appropriate mechanisms for the safe transit of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, in accordance with Article 5 of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding,” the statement said.
The Omani foreign minister emphasized diplomacy as the preferred means of preventing further escalation.
“The Foreign Minister of Oman, emphasizing his country’s principled stance on utilizing diplomacy to prevent the escalation of tensions in the region, expressed hope that with the full implementation of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding between Iran and the United States, we will witness an improvement in the security situation in the region,” the post said.
The parallel developments underscored the competing pressures facing Iran’s new leadership: demands for retaliation over Ali Khamenei’s killing and diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing regional tensions and protecting commercial transit through one of the world’s most strategically important waterways.
