Muhammad remained the most popular name for newborn boys in England and Wales in 2025, marking the third consecutive year it has led the rankings, according to a Thursday post from the Office for National Statistics.

The ONS announcement said the name again placed first among boys’ names, continuing a trend that has become a focus of political debate in the United Kingdom.

The ranking prompted criticism from Restore Britain leader Rupert Lowe, who tied the name’s continued rise to broader concerns about the country’s changing population.

“‘Muhammad’ has comfortably topped the list for the most popular boy name for the third year running,” Lowe posted. “You can call me Islamophobic, I really don’t care … This is awful and demonstrates the rapidly changing demographics of our country.”

Lowe’s office and Restore UK did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

The discussion comes as the United Kingdom’s Muslim population has grown significantly over the past decade. About 4 million Muslims live in the UK, accounting for 6% of the country’s population, according to a March 2025 report from the Muslim Council of Britain.

The report also said Muslims accounted for about 32% of the UK’s population growth between 2011 and 2021.

Lowe has also drawn attention to another issue involving Muslim communities in the UK. In June, he released “The Rape Gang Inquiry Report”, which alleged that some young Muslim men befriended, kidnapped, drugged and raped girls as young as 11, and in some cases forced girls they impregnated to undergo abortions.

The report alleged that such abuse occurred in nearly 40% of the UK’s local authority districts.
