Charles Leclerc delivered a commanding performance to claim victory for Ferrari at the British Grand Prix on Sunday, overcoming late-race drama at Silverstone as the race ended behind the safety car following a crash involving Max Verstappen.
The Monegasque driver controlled much of the race and appeared on course for a hard-fought victory before the closing laps were thrown into chaos. With just four laps remaining, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen crashed out, prompting race officials to deploy the safety car. Although teams initially expected the safety car to return to the pits for one final lap of racing, it remained on track until the chequered flag, bringing the race to an anticlimactic finish.
Leclerc crossed the line to secure an important victory for Ferrari, adding another memorable chapter to his 2026 Formula One campaign. The win highlighted Ferrari’s growing competitiveness as the championship battle continues to intensify midway through the season.
Mercedes’ George Russell capitalised on the late drama to finish second, collecting valuable championship points after what had been a challenging weekend. His result significantly reduced the lead held by teammate and championship leader Kimi Antonelli, cutting the gap to just 25 points after nine rounds of the season.
Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton completed the podium in third for Ferrari, giving the Italian team a double podium finish. However, Hamilton’s result remained under review after race stewards launched an investigation into a possible yellow-flag infringement during the closing stages of the race. The outcome of that investigation could potentially affect the final classification.
Antonelli’s afternoon proved to be one of frustration after starting from pole position. The 19-year-old Italian initially looked capable of fighting Leclerc for victory and had begun reducing the gap to the Ferrari driver with just over 10 laps remaining. However, his race unravelled when he suddenly reported a mechanical problem over team radio, forcing him to slow dramatically.
Unable to maintain his pace, Antonelli dropped down the order and eventually finished a disappointing 16th, leaving him without any championship points despite beginning the race from the front of the grid. The setback handed his closest rivals an opportunity to close the gap in the drivers’ standings and added fresh intrigue to the title race.
Silverstone once again delivered an action-packed afternoon filled with strategy, mechanical drama and late-race tension. While fans were denied the thrilling final-lap battle many had anticipated because of the safety car finish, Leclerc’s flawless drive and Ferrari’s strong overall performance ensured the Scuderia left Britain celebrating one of its most significant victories of the season.
With the Formula One championship now approaching its halfway point, Leclerc’s victory, Russell’s strong finish and Antonelli’s costly retirement have tightened the battle at the top of the standings, setting the stage for an increasingly competitive second half of the 2026 campaign.
