Ukrainian drones struck an oil terminal in St. Petersburg on Saturday, according to Russian officials, in the latest attack on Russia’s energy infrastructure during the fifth year of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

The strike is part of Ukraine’s continuing campaign against Russian oil facilities, the Associated Press reported. The bombardment has contributed to a fuel crisis inside Russia, according to the report.

Russian officials said air defenses shot down 72 Ukrainian drones over St. Petersburg and the surrounding region.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the attack as “long-range sanctions” against Russia. He also said a military target near St. Petersburg was hit.

The strike adds to pressure on Russia’s oil sector, which has increasingly come under Ukrainian drone attacks as Kyiv seeks to weaken Moscow’s ability to sustain its war effort.
