An international fleet of tall ships has arrived off the New Jersey coast as part of the opening celebration for America’s 250th anniversary, bringing historic vessels from around the world to waters tied to the nation’s Revolutionary War history.
The ships gathered near Sandy Hook, New Jersey, for the Sail4th 250 tribute, an event marking the semiquincentennial of the United States and highlighting the maritime traditions that shaped early America.
The fleet includes vessels from roughly 20 nations, with ships traveling from countries including Italy, India, Peru, Poland, Spain and Sweden, according to Fox News.
Officials and organizers met Friday in Sandy Hook to describe the scope of the event and its connection to the nation’s founding era.
“Nearly 250 years ago, it was here at Sandy Hook that George Washington’s army drove the British from New Jersey,” said Gov. Mikie Sherrill, a former naval officer. “It was from this day that the last British ships of the Revolutionary War departed.”
Sandy Hook also contains the country’s oldest continuously lit lighthouse, which has guided maritime traffic since 1764. The area is now part of Gateway National Recreation Area, a 27,000-acre national park spanning New York and New Jersey that draws more than 9 million visitors each year.
The arrival of the ships adds an international presence to the America 250 observances, combining military allies, historic vessels and maritime pageantry along the New Jersey shore. The tall ships also serve as reminders of the era when sail-powered vessels dominated trade, exploration, warfare and coastal life in America and across the world.
Video from the area showed several ships offshore near Sandy Hook, offering a wide view of the fleet gathered for the celebration. One video shared from the scene had no audio but showed multiple vessels from a distance.
A second video provided a closer look at some of the ships participating in the event.
Another video focused on the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Eagle, one of the vessels highlighted during the gathering.
The Sail4th 250 event places the tall ships near a location with direct Revolutionary War significance while showcasing international participation in America’s milestone anniversary. The ships’ arrival also underscores the continuing diplomatic and ceremonial role of naval traditions as the United States begins marking 250 years since its founding.
