Gas prices moved lower ahead of the Fourth of July weekend, giving many American drivers some relief as holiday travel gets underway.

The national average price for regular gasoline dropped to $3.84 per gallon Thursday, according to AAA. That was 45 cents lower than a month earlier and about 8 cents below the average price from one week ago.

Most Americans are now paying under $4 per gallon, though prices vary widely by state.

Among the lower 48 states, Indiana had the lowest average price Thursday at $3.13 per gallon. California had the highest average in the continental United States at $5.40 per gallon.

Hawaii recorded the highest price nationwide, with drivers paying an average of $5.49 per gallon.

The decline comes as crude oil prices have also eased following an interim peace agreement between the United States and Iran. After trading in the mid-$70s per barrel, oil prices fell to just over $67 per barrel Thursday.

Lower crude prices can help reduce gasoline costs because oil is a major component of fuel pricing. The drop offers some relief to families traveling for Independence Day at a time when fuel costs remain a key household expense.

The Fourth of July holiday typically brings heavy road travel, making the price decline timely for drivers filling up before long weekend trips.
