“We cannot and will not have that woman on this show.”
Actress/comedienne Cheryl Hines reportedly will not be appearing in a role on longtime colleague Larry David’s new TV sketch comedy series.
That’s because former First Lady Michelle Obama allegedly vetoed the possibility of hiring the wife of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services in the Trump administration, according one or more show business insiders.
If accurate, this purported cancellation hardly sounds like the inclusiveness that Democrats like Obama claim to champion.
Keep in mind that this report about Michelle Obama’s supposed intervention in casting decisions was published as an “exclusive” in the Daily Mail tabloid, so draw your own conclusions about its potential accuracy.
Larry David, 78, was the co-creator of NBC’s Seinfeld and the creator and star of HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm, both massively popular comedies.
According to the Daily Mail, this is what happened, or didn’t happen, for Cheryl Hines behind the scenes in connection with David’s new HBO venture that “honors” America’s 250th birthday:
“Sources close to the seven-episode sketch show, Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness: An Almost History of America, which premiered June 26, said that the former first lady — an executive producer on the series — ‘commanded that Kennedy’s wife be banned from the cast because she’s now all-MAGA, all-the-time.’ In fact, the prospect of Hines joining the show was enough to make Michelle go ‘absolutely ballistic,’ one insider claimed.
“In Michelle’s eyes, 60-year-old Hines committed the ultimate sin by dropping her long affiliation with the Democratic Party to form an amicable friendship with President Donald Trump and his Republican allies, sources said…”
Further from the Daily Mail:
“Another insider, who like the others asked to remain anonymous for fear of retribution from the powerful Obamas, told the Daily Mail: ‘Michelle felt that Cheryl wasn’t any great shakes as an actress, but mainly she felt she was disgustingly all MAGA because she was married to Bobby Kennedy Jr who she described as a turncoat to the Democratic party and a verifiable whack job as Trump’s Secretary of Health and Human Services.'”
Many Americans would find it difficult to have any feelings either way about a purported feud between self-involved liberal celebrities.
Hines, who switched her party affiliation from Democrat to independent in the last year or so, is generally more MAHA than MAGA, however.
She played Larry David’s wife on the aforementioned Curb Your Enthusiasm – a hit show which was like Seinfeld on steroids — for 12 seasons.
Similar to many in the entertainment space, Larry David suffers from Trump derangement syndrome.
The irreverent content on Curb Your Enthusiasm, however, was the opposite of woke, and so politically incorrect, that you might reasonably wonder if David was or is perhaps overcompensating just to stay in good graces with movers and shakers in far-left Hollywood (or what’s left of it), not that the super-wealthy progressive needs their money for future projects.
For those who don’t subscribe to HBO, there are plenty of hilarious video clips from Curb on YouTube.
Larry David reportedly ghosted Hines over politics, per the Daily Mail, which is a sad phenomenon that has occurred across the country in recent years among families and friends from all walks of life:
“David’s personal and professional relationship with Hines, however, ‘completely faded’ after her husband dropped his longtime Democratic affiliation…and briefly ran as an independent in 2024 against former President Joe Biden, who David once publicly supported.”
RFK Jr. subsequently endorsed Donald Trump for president in the 2024 election campaign.
Barack Obama is also an executive producer on Larry David’s new show.
It’s not as if anyone expected either Obama to be rolling up their sleeves to actually do any substantive work, the Daily Mail seemed to confirm:
“According to a well-placed insider, Michelle, 62, as an executive producer, didn’t have much to do with the script or other aspects of David’s series. She was, however, involved in the casting — who the cast members and guest stars would be — and signed off on all of them, making it known: ‘No Cheryl Hines!’”
With all his success and industry clout, Larry David could have intervened, but was reportedly too timid to do so, according to what one insider told the news outlet”
“But banning Cheryl was a command from Michelle that Larry could not go against, even if he had wanted to, for old time’s sake, and mend their past close ties. He always respected her as an actress. But Michelle’s the boss. And you don’t cross the boss, especially a powerful anti-MAGA force like Michelle.”
The outcome supposedly left Cheryl Hines “devastated,” and “terribly hurt and emotionally injured” because she and David “had become like bosom buddies” over the years.
“We cannot and will not have that woman on this show. She’s not one of us,” Michelle Obama supposedly told production staff during a planning meeting, the Daily Mail claimed.
Ironically, virtue-signaling Hollywood still laments the Blacklist from the 1950s. Much has been written about contemporary Hollywood, however, cancelling nearly anyone who is perceived as Republican or right-wing adjacent, causing many in the industry to self-censor their political beliefs to avoid losing their careers.
As of now, Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness: An Almost History of America currently seems to have many negative user reviews on IMDB, but somehow still has a 7.0 rating.
The show currently has a lackluster 43 percent audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, so perhaps Hines being denied a guest-starring role was a blessing in disguise.
